UFC 126's Three Stars: Silva, Jones and Cerrone
UFC 126 kicked off an excellent February of MMA, filled with Silva/Belfort, the start of Strikeforce's heavyweight Grand Prix, and the UFC's trip to Australia. Who stood out at 126?
No. 1 star -- Anderson Silva: With the kick heard round the world -- at least, all the way to Brazil -- the middleweight champion cemented his standing as the best ever. This was his 14th win in a row and his eighth title defense. The best part? He is eager to put it all on the line against welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre.
No. 2 star -- Jon Jones: In beating Ryan Bader, Jones outwrestled the wrestler, earning an immediate title shot in the process. Despite the quick turnaround, early betting lines have already suggested that Jones is the favorite to win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
No. 3 star -- Donald Cerrone: Throughout his career in the WEC, Cerrone heard questions about whether he could cut it as a UFC lightweight. Judging by Saturday's performance, the answer is an emphatic yes. He dominated Paul Kelly and finished him off with a violent rear naked choke, not long after finding out that his grandfather had passed away. For that, he won a $75,000 bonus -- a bonus 7.5 times larger than any he had received in the WEC.
Honorable mention -- Miguel Torres: The crowd at the Mandalay Bay didn't appreciate Torres' strategy of picking apart Banuelos from the outside, using a jab to keep Banuelos away, but that crowd must have no appreciation for history. In Torres' losses to Brian Bowles and Joseph Benavidez, he charged inside on short fighters, giving up his reach advantage. In his UFC debut, Torres still used his effective jab, but stuck with a strategy that worked.
Dishonorable mention -- Japanese MMA: It was a rough night for UFC fighters from Japan. Both Michihiro Omigawa and Norifumi Yamamoto lost, and then Yushin Okami learned that if GSP beats Jake Shields, he has to wait on his chance at the middleweight title.

Saturday night's Nonito Donaire vs. Fernando Montiel fight was a big event for boxing, and a big victory for Donaire. But it was also something else: A demonstration of why mixed martial arts is a safer sport than boxing.One of the key differences between MMA and boxing is that when an MMA fighter gets knocked down by a punch, he has to be alert enough to protect himself, or else the fight is over. In boxing, when a fighter gets knocked down, the referee starts counting, and the fighter has until a 10 count to get back to his feet. Which means a boxer whose brain is concussed badly -- as Montiel's brain was concussed when Donaire knocked him down in the second round -- can stagger back to his feet to take more punishment.
Donaire hit Montiel with a huge left hook and then a right uppercut as Montiel was tumbling to the canvas, and when Montiel hit the floor it was frightening: Montiel's arms went straight up over his head and his legs were twitching, and it looked like he was having some kind of seizure. In MMA, a competent referee would have immediately called off the fight, and the ringside doctor would have rushed in to treat the fallen fighter.

Ellenberger holds on to beat Rocha at UFC 126
Welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger (23-5) held off Carlos Eduardo Rocha (9-1) in a split decision at UFC 126 in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Ellenberger won with the bizarre score of 27-30, 29-28, 29-28.
For much of the first round, Rocha smothered Ellenberger, switching from side control to top control, trying for a leg lock and chokes, but Ellenberger survived and returned to his feet. He landed a few strikes before Rocha got him back on the ground, and in the last 30 seconds of the round, Rocha locked on a Kimura. He turned and cranked on Ellenberger's arm, switching it to an Americana, but the round ended before the submission could be secured.
Ellenberger recovered in the second round, with the action slowing down considerably. After both engaged in tentative stand-up for much of the round, Ellenberger scored a takedown with 20 seconds left. Rocha tried to secure a triangle choke but didn't have enough time.
By the third round, Rocha was diving for takedowns, which Ellenberger shook off easily. Ellenberger landed more power shots and then a takedown with 30 seconds left in the fight. He didn't do much with the takedown, but held off any submission attempts by the grappling wizard Rocha.
The 27-30 scorecard is puzzling, as it's surprising to see that a judge gave every round to the loser. Rocha fought well early on but seemed to lose steam, while Ellenberger did not.
Ellenberger was slated to fight Jon Fitch, but lost the chance to fight for the title shot when Fitch was given a fight with B.J. Penn.

'The other Overeem' grounds and quickly submits Sefo
Little bro is getting all the attention, but don't sleep on Valentijn Overeem. The MMA veteran is dangerous and especially a guy like Ray Sefo, who has so liittle MMA experience. Overeem stood with the kickboxer Sefo for a while then got it to the ground easily and submitted Sefo in a matter of seconds via neck crank at 1:37 of the first at the Izod Center in New Jersey.
Overeem's younger brother, Alistair is one of the favorites in the main field of the tournament. He's also the Strikeforce heavyweight champ.Sefo, 39, is a very good kickboxer, but trying to play catch up with his knowledge of the ground game. Sefo (2-1 MMA, 56-21-1 kickboxing) was more than holding his own on the feet. The more athletic and younger Overeem (29-25) was getting hit with some jabs and overhand rights.
With 3:10 gone by in the fight, Overeem, 34, dropped for a sloppy double-leg takedown. Sefo sprawled, but Overeem was still able to crawl his way into a takedown. Sefo found himself underneath Overeem, who was in side control. The Dutch kickboxer got his right arm under Sefo's head and pulled up. The New Zealander quickly tapped. When he rose to his feet, he was grabbing his left shoulder.

BJ Penn Brings in Matt Hughes for UFC 127 Fight Preparations
B.J. Penn reunited with a former rival last week, not as foes but as training partners. Penn, who competed against Matt Hughes in a trilogy of fights spanning 2004 to 2010, recently worked with Hughes in preparation for his upcoming UFC 127 fight against Jon Fitch on Feb. 27 in Australia.
"Me and Matt had great workouts," Penn said Tuesday on a conference call. "Him pushing me up against the fence, him trying to take me down. I definitely think that was the best training partner I could have had for this fight."

Herschel/Overeem interview: 'The Reem' feels like he's got Fedor trapped
Strikeforce pulled off a coup by bringing Herschel Walker and Alistair Overeem around radio row in Dallas just days before Super Bowl XLV. The NFL legend/fighter and star fighter appeared on dozens of stations.

Word had it that Overeem didn't get a lot of attention from general sports talk shows, which were probably unaware of his career, so when ESPNRadio1100 got the fellas to sit down, we decided to focus on the Strikeforce heavyweight champ. Overeem talked about why he agreed to take part in the promotion's heavyweight Grand Prix. He was tempted by the fact that Fedor Emelianenko, if he beats Antonio Silva, is now locked into fighting him.

Even Vitor Belfort was impressed with the kick Anderson Silva threw to knock Belfort out at UFC 126. Belfort tweeted, "I just saw the kick. It was fantastic even then I think this will land once in a million."
A front kick by itself is not that impressive. It's usually thrown to the body to create space, but can be dangerous because your opponent could catch it, and use it for a takedown. This kick was unique because of where Silva landed it and the speed he used in throwing it. Silva placed the kick perfectly on Belfort's chin, snapping his head back. He also threw it so fast that Belfort had no chance at catching Silva's leg.
But where does it rank among other head kick knockouts?
Do you put it above Anthony Pettis' Matrix-like, off-the-cage kick of Ben Henderson at the final WEC event? Or the head kick that Rashad Evans used to knock out Sean Salmon and signal that Evans was more than "just a wrestler?" Maybe it's Gabriel Gonzaga using the Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic's signature head kick against him, knocking the Pride legend to the canvas? Or Dan Hornbuckle stiffening Akihiro Gono at Sengoku's Ninth Battle?
Considering the circumstances of the bout, Silva is above them all. He was defending his belt in the main event of a sold-out, Super Bowl weekend UFC card. He knocked out someone who was last knocked out in 2004, and that was via a doctor's stoppage.

Nice guys finish fights: Marquardt, sick kids, Lawlor and troops
Fighters may spend their days punching people in the face and trying to rip limbs off of their opponents, but that doesn't mean they're not nice people. Plenty of fighters give their time to charity without hope of publicity or adulation. Here, we aim to give them both publicity and adulation.
First up: hanging out with sick kids:
Nate Marquardt and his team from Grudge Training Center took a break from training for Yoshihiro Akiyama to visit the Children's Hospital in Colorado.
Next up, Tom Lawlor and the troops:
Tom Lawlor led a delegation that included Seth Petruzelli and Nate Quarry to visit and train with troops stationed around the Pacific.

After moments lost in translation, Silva and Belfort talk of UFC 126's importance in Brazil
Brazil has a long, rich history in mixed martial arts. Gracie jiu-jitsu was one of the backbones of the sport and since then the South American nation has produced dozens of champions around the world, including three of the current seven UFC champs. Anderson Silva, ranked best pound-for-pound fighter in the world , leads the brigade. He along with fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort, his opponent at UFC 126, have a chance to push MMA to new levels in their home country.
It's hard to believe, but the sport still struggles in Brazil for mainstream exceptance. There seems to be a disconnect between the sport and many potential viewers. With their upcoming fight and their prefight media work, Belfort and Silva have a chance to close that gap.
Wednesday's press conference provided a big opportunity, but it almost fell apart before the fighters got to spread their message.
The UFC decided it was time to bring a Portuguese translator (pictured below with microphone) for Silva.
To this point in his career, the middleweight champ's manager Ed Soares has always served in that role. Soares was placed amongst the media on Wednesday, sitting next to (on the left) the newly appointed translator.
It was awkward. Silva, wearing dark sunglasses for much of the presser, didn't appear very happy about the change. The new translator didn't help his cause or ease Silva's lack of comfort. He struggled with the basic concept of first fielding the question, then relaying it to Silva and most importantly relaying Silva's answer back in English.
John Morgan from MMAjunkie opened with some of the early questions for the champ (VIDEO - 4:15 mark).
Morgan: A lot of people are saying Vitor is the best striker he's faced. Does feel that way or where does he feel Vitor falls in that mix?
Silva through the translator: No.
Morgan: Anderson had to deal with a lot of fan criticism over a couple of his fight, but obviously the last one was a thriller. Does he feel all that is behind him now or does he have something to prove to the fans?
Silva through the translator: No
Dana White: It’s gonna be one of those press conferences.
The translator stumbled, bumbled and seemed uncomfortable. He was allowed to translate one more exchange. When he described something as the "essence" of what Silva said, that was it. An annoyed White re-installed Soares as the translator for the remainder of the presser.
It was a good thing because there was a good-sized Brazilian media contigent on hand and the opportunity to spread the message back home could've been wasted.
Belfort, who speaks English pretty well, talked about the journey for MMA in Brazil from 1997 to 2011
"People were saying the sport is violent. So I went through a lot in Brazil," Belfort said of the reaction he got as a 19-year-old. "So now is a time, people are accepting our sport."The UFC will turns thing up a notch after this event by landing in Rio de Janeiro late in the summer.
"Dana bringing the UFC to Rio is amazing, but now we need the open channel. We need the network (television). So people need to open their mind, the sponsorships," Belfort said. "They need to come. They need to enjoy. They need embrace the UFC. It's just like soccer. We need all the channels (wanting to air) the sport."
Silva was excited about more people being exposed to the sport.
"I think it's a great opportunity for the Brazilian fans. Myself, as an mma fighter representing the UFC and I can remember growing up as a kid. I think this is going to break down a lot of barriers not only in Brazil, but break down around the barriers throughout the whole world and give opportunities to kids that they may not have not had before," said Silva.
White said later that we still don't have a feel in the U.S. for how big this fight is in Brazil. Hopefully Silva and Belfort will open up a little more today during open workouts. It sounds like there's a good buzz in the home country for this legend vs. legend battle.

UFC 126 shocker: Jones given immediate title shot after submitting Bader
Now that's a night. Jon Jones showed off another part of his sick arsenal in taking out unbeaten Ryan Bader at UFC 126. The lanky 23-year-old light heavyweight phenom overpowered Bader for 6-of-9 minutes on the ground and finished the fight with a guillotine choke. Then the UFC shocked Jones and fans by offering the kid a shot at the UFC light heavyweight title against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Jones accepted on the spot.
"I feel great. God is so good. I feel great," Jones told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "Hats off to Endicott, New York. And I'm going for a world title baby. Let's do it!"
Rogan announced that Rashad Evans, Rua's original opponent at UFC 128 was out with an injured knee. Dana White confirmed to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole that the fight is still on for mid-March in Newark, N.J.
Jones (12-1, 6-1 UFC) will have just over five weeks to prep for the biggest fight of his young career. Iole reports that Evans injured his knee yesterday. According to Dr. Steve Sanders, the knee will keep Evans sidelined for 6-8 weeks.
Bader (12-1, 5-1 UFC) is a huge, thickly-muscled light heavyweight, but tonight he looked no different than every other Jones' opponent in the UFC. The kid is thin, but he's overpowered everyone when they've locked horns with him.
After toying with some standup at the start of the fight, Jones scored an easy takedown just 30 seconds in. He muscled Bader on the ground, which shocked many observers considering he was facing a former All-American wrestler from Arizona State. Jones worked for different chokes while he kept the fight on the ground for two minutes. Once it got back up to the feet, Bader looked intimidated by Jones' length. He attempted a takedown from a mile away and wound up on his back again for the final two minutes of the first.
In the second, it was more of the same. Jones was more measured. Bader looked tentative on the feet. Then Bader made the mistake again of shooting from long distance and allowed Jones to settle on top of him, where he eventually sunk in the nasty guillotine. His 84-inch reached help set it up and it was clear, his grip was like a vice. Bader tapped at 4:20 of the second.
Update: Jones received a $75,000 bonus for Submission of the Night.

The mobs show up in North America to meet GSP and Fedor
Fight nights are usually the big nights in mixed martial arts, but yesterday on a random Tuesday, the sport took center stage in Toronto and New York. The UFC hit the ground in Canada for a big press conference to introduce the fighters for its April event in Ontario. Strikeforce held a huge fanfest in New York. Fedor Emelianenko was swarmed like a rockstar.
Check out the photos at Roseland in New York City as Fedor, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Sergei Kharitonov, Andrei Arlovski, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Brett Rogers and Frank Shamrock hung out with the crowd.
Dyami Arroyo of The Bronx was the first to show at 8:30 a.m. Despite cold, bitter, windy conditions, he kept his spot at the head of the line. "There was no way I was going to miss a chance to meet Fedor and the greatest heavyweights in the world," Arroyo told Strikeforce P.R.. "As soon as I heard about this, I told my boss I was taking the day off."
Said Brooklyn’s Joe Doyle, who arrived a little after Arroyo and Diaz: "To get this kind of access to these kinds of fighters is unbelievable," he said. "There was no way I wasn’t going to be here. I am really happy that STRIKEFORCE did something like this for us. No other MMA organizations do anything like this around here."
Strikeforce opens its heavyweight Grand Prix this Saturday in New Jersey (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT). Fedor faces Antonio Silva while Arlovski battles Kharitonov.

Jacare Souza Submits Robbie Lawler to Retain Strikeforce Belt

Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza used a Brazilian jiu jitsu clinic in the second and third rounds of his title fight with Robbie Lawler Saturday night at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg, dominating the positional game in the second round and forcing Lawler to tap to a rear-naked choke in the third.
The victory was the most impressive of Jacare's MMA career, a fight in which he came back from getting badly hurt in the first round to completely control the second and third.
"My English is so bad -- I'm so sorry everybody," the Brazilian Jacare told the crowd, before adding, "I came prepared for everything."
Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza used a Brazilian jiu jitsu clinic in the second and third rounds of his title fight with Robbie Lawler Saturday night at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg, dominating the positional game in the second round and forcing Lawler to tap to a rear-naked choke in the third.The victory was the most impressive of Jacare's MMA career, a fight in which he came back from getting badly hurt in the first round to completely control the second and third.
"My English is so bad -- I'm so sorry everybody," the Brazilian Jacare told the crowd, before adding, "I came prepared for everything."

Viking trash talk: Wren says Lesnar is a poser
Who knew there was such angst and jealousy in the world of Vikings? Brock Lesnar tabbed himself a nordic warrior, grew a gnarly beard and bagged a deer during a hunting trip to Canada. Justin Wren, a fellow American MMA fighter of Scandanavian descent, took Lesnar to task. Apparently, Lesnar isnt Viking enough. Wren posted on the Underground Forum that Lesnar's beard was weak and phony:
One had a beard for a month... The other was the only student with his own razor at middle school.
One was clean shaven for over 30 years... The other hasn't shaved once since high school (5 1/2 years)
Wren says deer, schmeer.
One shoots a deer from HUNDREDS of yards away ... and carries it out.
The other's FIRST hunt, he used only a 3 inch knife, chased down hog, flipped it to it's back, ripped out it's heart, and carried out the "Brock" sized hog over a 1,000 yards out through heavy brush, creek beds, cactus, 2 & 1/2 weeks after back surgery.
Wren finished by mocking on Lesnar for eating deer sausage while he was feasting hog hearts, one evidently exhibiting the stab wounds.
This is clearly some good-natured ballbusting. If not, Wren, a former contestant on Season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter," better get his career into gear so we can see the "Yuppie Viking' against the "real Viking' at UFC 154. Check out Wren's website.

In Poll of Favorite Sports, MMA Is Overlooked

Check out the results and you'll see about what you'd expect: Pro football is clearly America's most popular sport, baseball is next, then college football, auto racing, basketball and hockey.

The reason? MMA wasn't even one of the choices Harris Interactive gave to poll respondents.

Honest Forrest: 'I'm ranked nothing' and 'I'm terrified'
Forrest Griffin isn't anywhere close to the best fighter in the UFC, but he's still one of the most popular with fans in spite of being away from active fighting since late 2009. He's also winless since the middle of 2008.
The former light heavyweight champ faces Rich Franklin, another fan favorite on Saturday at UFC 126. The crowd will be torn. Do they root for the likable Franklin or the everyman Griffin?
Griffin thinks he's understand that connection he has with the fans.
"I kind of say what people are thinking," Griffin told MMAHeat's Karyn Bryant (2:00 mark). "I don't really say, 'I'm gonna try me best.' (I say) 'yeah, I'm terrified. Fighting in front of thousands of people is scary and there's a lot of money at stake. And I'll be honest, I want that money. It's important.'"
Griffin was up front about his nerves entering the Octagon after a 14-month layoff. The massive 205 pounder was sidelined after shoulder surgery and had to restrict his physical activity for months. Describing his return to the cage, Griffin threw out an interesting analogy to the Las Vegas Sun's Case Keefer.
"You’re like that if you haven’t done something in a year," Griffin said. 'Think of the time you went without sex for a year. You were nervous to get back out there."
Griffin said it's been 10 years since he's had a break this long. He said 2010 sucked because most of his problems were beyond his control.
Managing his weight, Kelly doesn't have time for trash talk
After a good run in the WEC, Donald Cerrone is entering the UFC with plenty of experience in hyping a fight. The "Cowboy" always has a lot to say, but Paul Kelly told the Canadian Press that he's not interested in going back and forth with the former WEC lightweight champ.
"I'm a little too long in the tooth now to get sucked in by it," Kelly said of trash talking with Cerrone. "Even though I'm still only a baby in the sport, I've been around for a while now."
Cerrone (13-3, 6-3 WEC) fired off a shot about not knowing Kelly. The Brit held back from a verbal war and was actually complimentary of Cowboy.
"He's rangy, he's very rangy. He's got better standup than my past opponents. He's very well-rounded," Kelly said. "I think he talks a lot of trash, which is a little disrespectful, but he'll learn his lessons."
Cerrone has since apologized for the initial comment, saying he's busy and doesn't follow doesn't follow MMA closely.
For Kelly, because of his training and fight schedule, there wasn't much time to engage. Kelly was a winner in November over T.J. O'Brien at UFC 123. He had a few days off then the UFC told him to get ready for UFC 126.
"I got straight back in the gym, I didn't have time to enjoy the luxuries of life. I've had no Christmas. I just take it as just what it is. There's point in moaning or bitching about it. Just get on with it," Kelly said. "I mean everyone else has to do it, don't they? [... ] I'm happy to be employed. I love my job. I wouldn't change it for the world."
Kelly is 5-3 in the UFC, but the fights have only been part of the battle. The other part has been his drop to lightweight. At 5-foot-8, he was small for welterweight, but he does have a big frame. Kelly used to fight as a high as 185 pounds. That's about the weight he still walks around at. Over time, Kelly has trained his body to more easily manage the weight cut. Three weeks ago, he was 169. The cut should be easier this time. Frankly it has to be. Kelly said he's fainted just before the weigh-in at his last two fights.
Cerrone makes his UFC debut as a minus-240 favorite.

Nice, respectful Nick Diaz ready for 'Cyborg'
At the Strikeforce press conference, Nick Diaz spoke about Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, the man who will try to take away his Strikeforce welterweight championship belt on Saturday. Diaz, the man who perfected the finger-in-your-face staredown, spoke with respect.
"I feel good and I’m ready to fight. Cyborg has a unique style and I know that he will give it his all and be as crazy as ever. But that’s good because I’m crazy, too," Diaz said. I have great respect for Cyborg. He is strong and has skills and comes real hard. I feel he deserves a shot."
Cyborg returned the respect.
“Nick Diaz is a very gallant fighter but I will press the action whether we are standing or on the ground," Cyborg said.
Gallant! I can think of no better word to describe Diaz.

Forrest Griffin Eager to Return Against Rich Franklin at UFC 126 (video)
Forrest Griffin is eager to return to the Octagon for the first time in over a year when he meets fellow former champion Rich Franklin on Saturday at UFC 126 and knows he needs an impressive win to get back into the title picture and move close to another shot at the 205-pound belt.
