UFC 131 prelims to stream on YouTube, Xbox 360 availability on the way

Continuing its effort to saturate the Internet with its product, the UFC made two moves this week.

The live stream of the UFC 131 undercard is once again available on the UFC Facebook page and now it'll also be on YouTube.

Unlike some of the mainstream sports, MMA has embraced social media and the Web. White told ESPN.com's Page 2 that he's constantly monitoring his product with the help of Twitter followers and Facebook.

"Back in the old days, this is [stuff] you wouldn't know until Monday," White said. "You'd hear all these bad things that happened during your event, and you'd be like, 'God, we got to make sure this doesn't happen next time.' ... Now, as these things are happening, I have people running around fixing all the problems that are happening that I'm reading on Twitter."

On Monday, White unveiled a new partnership with Xbox 360. UFC pay-per-views can be viewed by Xbox Live subscribers.

Xbox 360 will also be including new media services for users: UFC has partnered with Microsoft to deliver live matches, classic fights, interviews, and behind the scenes video straight to the Xbox 360. No word yet if full UFC events will be available through this service, but the likely answer would be "no," if only because streaming live events would probably put a dent in UFC earnings through pay-per-view.

This from G4Tv:

Dana White from the UFC follow up the lengthy "Xbox, Do My Bidding!" video to show off how the UFC will be be adding a "Watch It Live" app to the Xbox, providing you with stats, enhanced viewing options, and the ability to predict who might win a match

Shane Carwin Discusses Leaner Diet, Plan of Attack Against Junior dos Santos

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- MMA Fighting spoke to Shane Carwin on Wednesday about his UFC 131 fight against Junior dos Santos, how he lost over 20 pounds preparing for this fight, changing opponents on one month's notice, his take on the fight and working with Paul Heyman on the UFC Countdown show.

Soszynski interview: Brawling mentality takes smarts and a certain mindset

Shane Carwin's insertion into the main event at UFC 131 guarantees one thing, Junior dos Santos' opponent won't be running away if he gets drilled with some hard punches. That was a still a big question surrounding Brock Lesnar in his first fight back after the vicious loss against Cain Velasquez (Lesnar withdrew from the main event last month due to complications with diverticulitis).

It's tough to make a living in MMA without being able to take a punch. Krzysztof Soszynski, a grinding brawler in the UFC's light heavyweight division, knows that better than anyone.

Soszynski's a well-rounded fighter, but he isn't supremely talented. He often gets by on taking some shots and deliver more punishment back.

"I don't think anyone wants to get hit in the face. I just cover up really well. It's a mindset. I don't know how it is or how it happens. I have fun with it. If someone hits me, I want to hit them back even harder," Soszynski said (6:26 mark). "It's something that you're born with, not something you just learn."

On Monday, Soszynski's will was tested outside the cage. He got a call from UFC matchmaker Joe Silva that his opponent Igor Pokrajac was dropping out the fight. Soszynski wasn't happy.

"[After] a 15-week training camp, I just wanted to fight. I asked Joe Silva when he called on Monday, please get me a fight. I'll fight anybody, it doesn't matter who," said Soszynski.

Soszysnki was originally slated to face Aussie jiu-jitsu ace Anthony Perosh, then Pokrajac, a striker. Silva was able to lineup Mike Massenzio, but he comes from a wrestling background. Soszynski didn't hesitate for one second.

"I've been in the sport a long time. It doesn't matter if I'm fighting a wrestler, a jiu-jitsu guy or a striker. I'm looking forward to just going in there and having a great time," said Soszynski said.

The Canadian trains with all types of fighters at Reign Training Center in Southern California. Mark Munoz, a former NCAA All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State, is his main training partner and he also works with another good wrestling MMA fighter in Emmanuel Newton. Jason Miller was around to work his jiu-jitsu and a partnership with King's MMA doesn't hurt either. That camp is loaded with Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts.

This is a big fight for Soszynski (26-11, 5-2 UFC). He's facing a smallish 205-pounder in Massenzio, who took the fight on short notice. Though the fight is a bit perilous.

Soszynski hasn't fought since November. With the down time, he had both knees scoped and surgery on his nose, to alleviate a breathing issue. Massenzio (12-4, 1-2, UFC) is a tough style matchup. If he can get Soszynski to the ground, that'll eat away time from the clock and nullify the Canadian's power on the feet. Soszynski is a minus-240 favorite on the Las Vegas boards.

Persistence pays off for TUF 13 champ Ferguson

Call it cocky. Call it confident. Tony Ferguson said before and after his victory over Ramsey Nijem, that reaching the UFC was his destiny. He backed up his talk and put an exclamation point on what was a long journey.

"I was just so hungry. This was something I was destined to do," Ferguson told Cagewriter after his win at "The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale." "I wanted to do something different. I found my niche. This is exactly where I belong. I just want the paychecks to say UFC on them."

They will for at least the next year or so. Ferguson's knockout at the 3:54 mark of the first round guaranteed that. The fact that Ferguson was even standing in the Octagon on Saturday was unlikely chapter in his story.

His slot on TUF 13 was far from a given. He'd tried out two previous times and fell short.

Ferguson actually made it to the third round of cuts for Season 11. That's right, a dude who wrestled in college at 165, tried out for a season featuring middleweights. For Season 12, Ferguson flew to Washington D.C., then drove to Charlotte and didn't even make it out of the first round of cuts.

After that failure, he went back to work on the MMA minor league circuit.

"I was living paycheck by paycheck by fighting. I was living in the gym. You hear that story, but I never played that card. The one thing that I did do, I kept my mouth and kept my chin down," said Ferguson.

For Season 13, he took a more aggressive approach during the interview process.

"I went to the third tryout and brought all the aggression with me and everything I've ever had for those three years. My mom told me you kill'em with stats. 'Three time all-state at 152, two-time All American and national champ at 165 for Grand Valley State and I have a Pure Combat championship belt, and this is who I beat.' I was intense and they bought it," said Ferguson.

Once the 5-foot-9 Ferguson arrived in Las Vegas, he realized fighting at welterweight was going to be a rough ride.

"When I first got to the house I was like 'holy crap these guys are pretty big,'" Ferguson said. "The guys would say why don't you go to lightweight?"

Ferguson nearly bowed out of the competition in his first fight. Justin Edwards was giving Ferguson all he could handle before the smaller fighter pulled off an awesome upkick knockout (22:00 mark - video).

Ferguson realized he'd gone away from his roots and was trying to be too pretty in the Octagon.

"I forgot that I was a wrestler. I always wanted to just stand there and go toe-to-toe. There's nothing better than a fight that goes toe-to-toe. You slip and you move, but honestly Justin capitalized on taking me down. I started looking at that. Not so much Pernell Whitaker. That's when I got smarter," said Ferguson.

That was the turning point for Ferguson, who beat Edwards on his 27th birthday. In the next two fights, he destroyed Ryan McGillivray in 46 seconds and dispatched of Chuck O'Neil early in the third round.

After the win over Nijem, he's got a UFC contract in hand and nice bonus of $40,000 for the TUF 13 Knockout of the Night.

"I want to go to Disneyland," said Ferguson.

His fiancee Cristina, who lives near Ferguson in Ventura, Ca., has wanted to go for a while.

"Trust me we're going to go there and Knotts Berry Farm. I want to be able to have fun," said Ferguson.

Ferguson said he'll be back in the gym soon and fight wherever the UFC tells him. His future could be down at 155.

TUF 13 Finale weigh-in: Nijem not impressed by Ferguson

Another six-figure UFC contract will be snatched in less than eight hours. Anthony Pettis also has a UFC lightweight title shot on the line. Needless to say, there's a little pressure on several of the participants on tonight's Season 13 "Ultimate Fighter Finale."

Ramsey Nijem is one of the guys under the gun as he faces Tony Ferguson to close out the UFC's reality series. He was joker on the show and was in a similar mood all week. RawVegas caught up with Nijem, who joked around until we asked him if he impressed was by Ferguson (4:00 mark).

All 22 competitors were on the mark during the weigh-in at the Palms in Las Vegas. Clay Harvison's animal head/pelt was impressive, but couldn't match Danny Downes' good luck potato. The lightweight, facing Jeremy Stephens, pulled a potato from his trunks and tossed it into the crowd.

Lessons learned from season 13 of “The Ultimate Fighter”

Thirteen seasons in, any television show is going to feel stale, and "The Ultimate Fighter" has not escaped that fate. The show failed to excite throughout its 10-episode season.

In sitcom-land, this is usually when a long-lost daughter with a cute child who has a sassy catchphrase is introduced. Unfortunately for the UFC, Brock Lesnar had no sassy catchphrase, as his oft-repeated "Are we chicken s*** or chicken salad?" only served to confuse his fighters, and didn't prop up the ratings.

With just the live finale to go, we can now look back at the season and see what needs to be done to improve next season.

Go with exciting coaches over an "important match-up." The Brock Lesnar-Junior dos Santos match-up was to decide who the next heavyweight contender. That alone made that fight significant and exciting. It didn't need the TUF build-up to create interest. Lesnar and dos Santos showed themselves to be nice guys, but nice guys don't make watchable television.

Luckily, the UFC has already remedied that with the selection of Jason "Mayhem" Miller (pictured) and Michael Bisping for the coaches of TUF 14. Both men excel at getting under people's skin and running their mouths, which makes for much better television.

Share more about the fighters' stories. On this TUF cast, we had a devout Muslim, the son of a Baptist pastor, a man who was going through child-custody problems, and another father who kept the picture of his daughter with cornermen while he fought. They came from a diverse set of backgrounds and regions, and yet we only caught a glimpse of what made them interesting.

Let us get to know them, and we'll want to tune in and and cheer for (or against) these fighters. Not only that, it will make fans more interested in the fighters once they do reach the UFC.

Don't do anything to the Coaches Challenge. The episode where the coaches engage in a competition that has nothing to do with MMA is usually a highlight. This season, dos Santos, a Brazilian who knew nothing about American football, defeated Lesnar in a challenge that centered around American football. Leave it as is, unless the payout to coaches and fighters is upped.

Bring back the fight-in bouts. Taking away the requirement that fighters had to fight their way onto the show took away the action-packed first episodes. Fortunately, Dana White has already said that eliminating the fight-in bouts was a mistake, and that they will return for season 14.

What other changes would you like to see for "The Ultimate Fighter?" Will you tune in next season? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

MMA Regulation Passes Another Hurdle In New York Vote

Madison Square GardenMixed martial arts passed another hurdle in its quest to gain sanctioning in New York, as a bill to regulate the sport sailed through a vote in the state assembly's Tourism, Arts, Parks and Sport Development committee on Monday.

The vote overwhelmingly passed by a 16-3 margin, with two members absent.

Several obstacles, however, still stand in the way of regulated MMA coming to New York.

The bill will now move on to the Codes committee, which passed another version of the bill in 2010 before it died out. Should it pass again, it will move on to the Ways and Means committee, where it stalled last year. From there it would still have to pass a full Assembly vote and be signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a tall order given the limited time left in the current session, which is scheduled to end on June 20.

Assemblyman Dean Murray told New York's Newsday that he's spoken with Cuomo several times about MMA, and he was told, "Dean, if you get it to my desk, I'll sign it."

Interestingly, the committee that passed the bill today has MMA's chief opponent, Bob Reilly as one of its members. Not surprisingly, according to Newsday, Reilly was one of the three to vote against the bill. The others were Democrats John McEneny and Daniel O'Donnell.

With the Assembly still controlled by the Dems, several pundits have suggested that the bill will stall out again. Several politicians in the party have suggested that the bill should not be brought up for an Assembly vote until it is decided upon within the party, even though many believe there are enough Republican votes to join the pro-MMA Democrats in passing the bill.

Whether it passes or fails, we should have our answer on MMA's 2011 fate in New York within two weeks.

White vlog: Vick, Ice-T, Bradford big UFC fans

UFC president Dana White released the first of his video blogs for UFC 131, and this one is pretty much just White talking to celebrities.

      Things to watch for:

-- Lots and lots of F-bombs. If your boss isn't keen on f-bombs being thrown around, don't watch this.

-- About a minute in, St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford telling White that some player is "better than I was at that age." If you can figure out who Bradford is referring to, do tell.

-- Two and a half minutes in, Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick making plans to go to UFC 133 at the Well Fargo Center in Philly. Hopefully, the lockout will be over by then and the fights will be a respite for the Eagles who are in training camp. Right? Hopefully?

-- White appeared at E3, announcing that pay-per-views will soon be available gaming systems like the Xbox.

-- At the end, White talks to Michael Bisping and Jason "Mayhem" Miller about their predictions for Carwin vs. dos Santos. Not surprisingly, the two coaches of the "The Ultimate Fighter 14" don't agree.

      Lensbaby Scout Fisheye review

I have been needing a fish-eye lens for my new Canon T2i HDDSLR for a while, so I was stoked when Lensbaby offered to send me their Scout fisheye to review. I had been looking at the verious 8mm fisheyes which provides a 180 degree field of view like the now classic death lens. The Scout is a 12mm lens and not quite as wide with a 160 degree field of view but is a lot cheaper than most fisheyes. As part of Lensbaby?s Optic Swap system, the fisheye optics can be switched out for other optics like pinhole or plastic lens. If you already have a compatible Lensbaby, you can buy the fisheye optic by itself saving around $100. I had been using the GoPro HD hHero for fisheye shots but that has it?s own limitations. Here is an unscientific comparison of the VX-2000 with a century .3X fisyeye, the GoPro, and the Scout.

I was impressed that the Scout was made of metal and has a very solid feel. The vignettes on the edges give images an early 90?s feel. The aperture is changed not with a ring like on other lenses but by switching out aperture disks. This requires you to unscrew the front element and drop the disk in place, a bit cumbersome when you are out in the streets but I doubt most people would need to change disks very often. I had a lot of fun shooting with a fisheye again and the Scout will likely be my go to fisheye for the foreseeable future.

If you are serious about shooting or filming skateboarding then you?ll want a wider, sharper, more expensive lens. If you are taking a more laid back approach and you think you may use other optics in the Lensbaby system then the Scout is worth considering. Below are a few skate shots taken with the Scout.

UFC 130 postfight: Bonuses, injuries, TUF 14 news, and SEAL Team 6 was at event

      - Travis Browne, Gleison Tibau, Brian Stann and Jorge Santiago all received $70,000 postfight bonuses. Browne got Knockout of the Night and Tibau's rear-naked choke of Rafaello Oliveira got him Submission of the Night. Stann and Santiago were honored for Fight of the night.

      - UFC 130 produced a lot of injuries. Frank Mir beat Roy Nelson easily on the scorecards, but may have suffered a broken his jaw for his efforts. Struve, Oliveira and Michael McDonald all went to the hospital as well. Stann showed up for the presser even though he suffered a broken thumb.

      - The injury news of night revolved around Brock Lesnar and his battle against diverticulitis. According to UFC president Dana White, Lesnar had surgery on Friday to remove 12 inches of his colon. Amazingly, Lesnar told White he was "a little sore." The surgery went well and Camp Lesnar hopes he can return at the start of 2012. White said Lesnar will probably lose a lot of weight on a liquid diet over the next few months.

      - Quinton "Rampage" Jackson elaborated on his fractured hand reference in the Octagon following his win over Matt Hamill. Jackson said he injured his left hand back in December or January in Japan. He did so when he was horsing around with a friend.

      - If Jackson legitimately has a broken hand, it may cost him a shot at a fight against Jon Jones in the fall. Lyoto Machida is also in the running. White wouldn't commit to choosing an opponent for the UFC light heavyweight champ.

      - There was interesting news about Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter." White confirmed that Jason Miller and Michael Bisping will be the coaches, but their season ending fight will not take place on pay-per-view. The fight will be part of the TUF 14 Finale that airs free on Spike.

      - Stann revealed the inspiring news that members of "SEAL Team 6" were in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The elite military operatives comprised the crew that located and killed Osama bin Laden.

      - Stann was asked about future opponents and sounded offended at the suggestion that he could fight fellow military veteran Tim Kennedy in the future.

      - White also revealed his dream for the future of TUF. While discussing international destinations for the show like the Philippines, White said he like to hold a season with 16 different TUF's in locations around the world. The UFC would close out the season by holding a TUF World Cup with the 16 winners.

      - In Hollywood news, White confirmed that a first will go down in a new MMA movie starring Kevin James. The UFC is allowing the movie to use its name and some of its personalities including fighters, Joe Rogan and Bruce Buffer. White said he was asked to be in the movie, but turned down the offer.

      - White elaborated on the Chael Sonnen situation confirming that the promotion won't be going renegade with the fighter and taking him to another state other than California. When asked why Zuffa is involved with allowing Josh Barnett, also in license limbo with California, to fight in Texas, White said, "That's not me. That's their deal." White was referencing Strikeforce management.

Pellegrino, 32, walking away from MMA career

Quinton Jackson looked solid on Saturday night, but his performance still leaves questions about his desire to continue fighting. The 32-year-old legend of the sport admits that he's fighting for money, not glory or titles. That's not uncommon amongst fighters.

Later in their careers, even with a lack of desire to train hard, most prize fighters will take a few extra fights past their prime. Kurt Pellegrino, 32, doesn't want to be one ofthose guys and is doing something about it.

It was just last March, that Pellegrino (16-6, 7-5 UFC) was riding a four-fight win streak, but now he's leaving the sport as an active fighter.

"At this time I am choosing to take some time off and step away from the sport as a fighter. Over my most recent fights I have come to the realization that at this point I no longer can, nor want to make fighting my first priority," [Pellegrino said on his website]. "[...] Even last year when i was on a 4 fight win streak I still was questioning myself. This has made me reconsider what my next step will be competitively. I have spoken at length with [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva about my decision and have decided not to renew my contract with the UFC."

Pellegrino wants to make his family his first priority.

"Most importantly I want to spend more time with my family. My daughter is four years old and I can't tell you how much of her life I've missed dedicating my life to training for fights. I did so willingly and I've made a lucrative career with the UFC, but I'm not sure I could ever say any amount of money was worth it. My wife and I just welcomed a baby boy and I can't bare the thought of missing as much of his 'firsts' as I did my daughters."

It looks like Pellegrino set himself up nicely. In his native New Jersey, he's got a gym in Belmar, a town on the Jersey Shore. He just expanded the Kurt Pellegrino Mixed Martial Arts Academy.

The future isn't certain for Pellegrino. He may not be completely through with active fighting, but he wants to step back and see if he can regain the hunger that's missing.

"I want to take the time to regroup, refocus, and rethink what it is that I want to do going forward. I want to do things that I enjoy right now and refresh my mind. I want to concentrate on my BJJ game and improve it. I want to work on my boxing game and improve that also. I'd like to compete in some grappling tournaments again like the old days and maybe even try my hand at a pro boxing fight. I want to have fun training again, bottom line."

Pellegrino put on some entertaining shows in the UFC. In 12 fights, he earned a postfight bonus on five occasions.

From a media standpoint, Pellegrino was an interesting guy to cover. Fighting at the highest level always seemed to be more mental than physical for Pellegrino.

His debut in the UFC against Drew Fickett was a prime example. Through two-plus rounds at UFC 61, Pellegrino smoked Fickett, only to make a silly mistake and get submitted in the third round. The same thing happened against Nate Diaz at Ultimate Fight Night 13.

Pellegrino was brutally honest about his failures. That included admitting that he'd taken his education less than seriously and still couldn't read well into his late 20's.

One of the best moments of his career came at UFC 88. Before the fight, Pellegrino spoke about living with his in-laws. He needed to win a fight bonus in order to buy his dream house for his wife and young daughter. Pellegrino beat Thiago Tavares that night, received a $60,000 Fight of the Night award and got his new house.

Browne scores highlight-reel KO at UFC 130

Travis Browne easily won the battle of super tall heavyweights, knocking out Stefan Struve at 4:11 in the first round at UFC 130 on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Both fighters wanted to show off their kicks early in the round, as they exchanged, sometimes simultaneously, leg kick after leg kick. Struve was in control for much of the round, even slapping on a few submission attempts on Browne. But after Brown popped out of a choke and the fight returned to their feet, he took advantage of the standing position. In the final minute of the round, Browne threw a perfect Superman punch. Struve's head snapped back, and his body caught air before he hit the ground.

"That's what we train every day. That's pretty!" Brown said, while watching the knockout replay.

The knockout keeps Browne's undefeated record intact, as he now is 11-0-1, while Struve falls to 21-5.

Guida video: Lightweight contender in a familiar spot as the underdog

Clay Guida has seen just about everything in the world of MMA, so he's not exactly intimidated by the athleticism and creativity of Anthony Pettis. Frankly, tonight's main event at "The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale" feels like the same storyline Guida deals with before most of his fights. The solid, yet unspectacular underdog trying to knock off the high-rising hot shot.

"To me, this fight is a win-win situation for me. I beat the guy who had the kick heard round the world and that's my dream, a title shot in the lightweight division," Guida told RawVegas.

Guida grinds and wears down his opponents. There are no one-punch or one-kick knockouts, but there are 28 wins, eight in the UFC.

The fans' perception of Pettis and Guida couldn't be at further ends of the spectrum. Pettis became a household name around MMA after pulling off one of the moves of the century with his dynamic "Showtime Kick" against Ben Henderson last year at WEC 53. Guida is a household name as well, but he's built his reputation by staying on the ground and working for all 15 minutes.

"His circus kicks were great against Ben Henderson, but people aren't going to remember that after my hand is raised on Saturday," said Guida.

Check out Guida's laid back attitude as he faces a guy, who most expect to be the next challenger for the UFC's lightweight title.

Guida isn't worried about Pettis' takedown defense. Pettis performed well against another high level wrestler in Shane Roller, but Guida was quick to point out that the former Oklahoma State wrestling star had cardio issues.

Carwin goes with slim look for dos Santos

It had to kill Shane Carwin to watch Cain Velasquez dismantle Brock Lesnar and take the UFC title. Had it not been for stamina issues, the probably should've been Carwin back at UFC 116.

The big man has been gone for a while recovery from back surgery and he's returned with a new look. His face and body are noticeably slimmer. The video above shows off Carwin's new diet with his nutritionist. It's interesting to hear that protein was cut out of the former 285 pounder's diet and stuff like recovery pudding was added.

"People are going to be surprised when they see Shane," Carwin's Brendan Schaub training partner told ESPNRadio1100's "The MMA Insiders" show. "It's the best I've seen him. He's putting things together. His cardio's great and he's more explosive and stronger than ever."

It seems like all the nonsense about the need for another division between 205 and 265 is going by the wayside. Many of the elite heavyweights are fine between 230 and 245 pounds.

The Triple Crown of Surfing has used surf art for years, with this years umbrella event artwork done by artist Chris Lundy (below), and below that are this years six competition posters…
