Josh Barnett?s Strikeforce Debut Possible for Georgia, Texas, or Tennessee

Josh Barnett is one of the critical factors in determining where the next leg of Strikeforce's grand prix heavyweight tournament takes place.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently stated that while Barnett's licensing issues in California have yet to be resolved, several states were willing to allow Barnett to fight provided he pass a drug test.

Barry, tired of 'Cro Cop' criticism, wants to crush Beltran

There's nothing nasty about Pat Barry outside the cage. Inside the Octagon can sometimes be a different story. If he's focused, Barry can be one of the most devastating strikers in the heavyweight division. That's a big if.

Too often, Barry's pleasant disposition follows him into his fights. The stocky kickboxer says there will be no loss of focus this weekend against Joey Beltran at the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2.

"This is a feeling I haven’t had in a long time," Barry told Sherdog. "Back in my kickboxing days, I used to have these every once in a while. Just an angry, want to break something, upset at something. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what it is that’s giving me this feeling, this sensation, but I’m very annoyed. Like I’m extremely annoyed and I feel like I’ve got to break something."

He wasn't "annoyed" enough back in June during his last fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and it cost Barry dearly.

Barry spoke often before the UFC 115 fight about what an honor it was to fight his idol. He was so pleasant it even got the normally stoic, business-like Cro Cop to lighten up.

When the fight hit the cage, the gap between the fighters was obvious. Cro Cop is a worn down 36-year-old while Barry, 31, has a lot of fight left in him. The American mauled Cro Cop early in the fight, but starting screwing around and turned things into a sparring session. Cro Cop went into survival mode and submitted a tired Barry. Since the upset loss, the talk of Barry's lack of killer instinct has been incessant.

"I’m still hearing about that, I’m still hearing people," Barry said. "My mother’s hearing this kind of [expletive]. People are approaching my mother and making these comments to her. It’s still going on now."

On the surface, Beltran appears to be a good matchup for Barry. He's a smallish heavyweight who likes to stand and bang, but he can also take a beating and has enough wrestling in his arsenal to pose a major threat to Barry if he doesn't take of business early.

There are still no significant fights on the horizon, but there have been some big moves this week in Japan.

In this edition of Nippon Weekly, Strikeforce is considering holding its second quarterfinal round of their Heavyweight GP in Japan, UFC is planning its own Japanese events in 2011 and DREAM co-promoter Real Entertainment and Strikeforce are possibly planning a lightweight tournament sans-FEG.

In Poll of Favorite Sports, MMA Is Overlooked

by Michael David SmithThe polling firm Harris Interactive regularly surveys Americans to find out their favorite sports, and the results of this year's poll are in. Check out the results and you'll see about what you'd expect: Pro football is clearly America's most popular sport, baseball is next, then college football, auto racing, basketball and hockey.

What you won't see anywhere is mixed martial arts.

The reason? MMA wasn't even one of the choices Harris Interactive gave to poll respondents.

Barry responds to Browne's nasty Fight for the Troops Twitter rant

Somewhere along the line, Pat Barry rubbed Travis Browne the wrong way. Browne had some pent up anger he wanted to vent and chose an odd time to do so. After Barry made an impassioned speech following his victory at Fort Hood over Joey Beltran, Browne unloaded on the former kickboxer suggesting his speech was a bit phony.

Browne was attacked by several followers and tried to clarify his comments, but it's clear he'd like a fight down the road with the loquacious Barry.

Shortly after the fight, Barry had no idea why he was under attack.

"He wants to know why am I now talking about my Dad's dog tags versus any other fight? It's because my Dad was in the Army and I'm on an Army base. Kind of makes sense. Seems like an opportune time to actually bring it up," Barry told Hector Castro from MMADieHards

Barry was totally confused.

"I don't why he's mad at me. I didn't do anything wrong to him. I don't even think we've ever met. Travis Browne says a lot of ugly things," said Barry.

He also told Browne to worry about his next fight against Stefan Struve. Browne and Struve square off at UFC 130 in May. Barry closed the interview by saying he would fight Browne if offered the chance.

Kimbo Slice returns to ring for the fake stuff ... pro wrestling

He began his fighting career as a novelty act and after trying mixed martial arts for three years, it looks like Kimbo Slice is returning to the novelty side of things. Plenty of MMA promoters have been asked about Kimbo as an MMA fighter, but no one has bitten. Now he's headed to the world of fake fighting. Kimbo has signed on for a pro wrestling event in Japan on Feb. 5.

Kimbo will be part of an eight-man pro wrestling tournament and will face Wakakirin Shinichi. He is the smaller of the two sumo wrestlers in the match below. Even in the fake stuff, Kimbo better keep his chin tucked and watch out for those vicious slaps. Wakakirin beat this guy silly with his slaps. The big guy could hardly stand at the end of the fight.

Wakakirin, 27, is a bit of a villain in Japan. He turned to pro wrestling after being banned from the world of sumo for marijuana possession. He pled guilty and received a suspended sentence of three years. Wakakirin also forfeited his pension of $5.3 million Yen per year. The Japanese take that ban very seriously. Wakakirin was scheduled to fight Bob Sapp at Dynamite!! 2010. The Japanese were not going to show the bout on free television.

[Related: Brock Lesnar's next big challenge]

Wakakirin's entry into pro wrestling was marked by a little controversy as well. He faced former UFC and PRIDE fighter Mark Coleman at IGF 13 in December. He defeated the MMA fighter, but Coleman's camp accused Wakakirin of straying from the script.

Kimbo hasn't fought since his UFC loss to Matt Mitrione back in May. After building his name through street-fighting videos on YouTube, Kimbo made the transition to MMA in 2007. He posted a 4-2 record, but there were questions about his dedication to training. He was 1-1 with the UFC, but also failed badly on the promotion's reality show "The Ultimate Fighter."

[Related: Is MMA too violent for kids?]

There were reports that the soon-to-be 37-year-old Kimbo was going into professional boxing, but he's yet to make his debut in the squared circle. Slice was going to work on the boxing side with the Shaws, Gary and son, Jared. That's been tabled for now.

"[Slice left the boxing training camp] due to some various injuries and to go film The Scorpion King. Upon his return, he didn’t show me any interest in boxing, so we just decided for right now to put it to the side," Slice’s former promoter Jared Shaw told FanHouse.

Jon Jones fighting Ryan Bader and expectations at UFC 126

When Jon Jones takes on Ryan Bader at UFC 126, he won't just be fighting the All-American wrestler from Arizona. Jones will be fighting to meet the expectations foisted upon any athlete who shows promise early. The light heavyweight has been a fan favorite since he started in the UFC, but with a large legion of fans comes heavy expectations. From MMAFighting.com:

"Meeting people's expectations is something I do worry about, and it's something Greg [Jackson] tells me not to think about," said Jones. "He says, 'You know Jon, you don't even need to win a fight, when you think about it. You're 23 and you're still learning. You're still a baby, so no fight for you should ever be a big, must-win fight for you, and no name or no opponent besides the cream of the crop should even effect you. You have so much time, a setback right now would only make you better.'"

It's hard to believe that he's been fighting for just under three years, and has just six fights with the UFC. Jones made a name by picking up two wins over Jake O'Brien, Andre Gusmao and Stephan Bonnar with flashy moves like spinning elbows. He was disqualified in his fight with Matt Hamill for throwing an illegal elbow, but that hasn't stopped Jones from using the effective technique. He won his next two fights via TKO, with his elbows stopping both Brandon Vera and Vladimir Matyushenko.

Those wins make plenty of fans wonder when Jones is going to get a title shot, putting more expectations on his broad shoulders. That's a heavy load for any man. With the mark he's already made on the UFC, it's easy to forget that Jones is just 23 years old.

Obama comment aftermath: Volkmann hits FOX Business, but also loses money

Freedom of speech in this country is a tricky thing. We talk all the time about fighting abroad to protect our rights yet if you speak your mind stateside you may put yourself in harm's way. Following his fight at UFC 125, Jacob Volkmann simply expressed his opinion, and the firestorm since has bordered on lunacy. He's gotten his name out via multiple television and radio appearances, but he's also lost a paying gig for simply expressing his opinion.

The fighter went mainstream last week, hitting the front page of Yahoo! and "The Tonight Show." He was a hot topic on sports and news radio. This week, he made an appearance on FOX Business. That's right, an MMA fighter on a television network focused on business news. All this for calling the president an idiot and saying he'd like to fight him.

On the downside, a few days after the original Obama video went viral, the Secret Service paid a visit to Volkmann. He also tells the ridiculous tale that his gig as high school coach is now in jeopardy.

"They put me on paid administrative leave because of my comment," Volkmann told Franklin McNeil on ESPN.com. "They said I represented the school in a bad way. I'm kind of irritated about that whole thing. So I can't coach because I have an opinion? That really irritates me."

Volkmann has also received numerous threats via email and phone calls. That's to be expected. The web allows for Internet tough guys to hide behind their computer screens and make threats every day, but for school officials to dump someone for expressing an opinion is, dare I say it -- un-American.

It seems like freedom of speech and the ability to promote open discourse takes a step back every day. Volkmann did nothing wrong. White Bear Lake High School in Minnesota should be ashamed of itself. Let's hope the history and civics teachers at White Bear don't say anything that may be taken as a threat or "embarrassing." The school be without a staff in a few months.

UFC Sues Justin.tv, Says 50,000 People Viewed UFC 121 Illegally

by Michael David SmithThe UFC is using its status as the industry leader in pay-per-view television to also become the leader in cracking down on companies that allow people to watch pay-per-view events online, without paying.

Zuffa, the UFC's parent company, announced Friday that it filed a lawsuit against Justin.tv, for what it calls "Justin.tv's repeated and ongoing failure to meaningfully address the rampant and illegal uploading of video of live Pay-Per-View UFC events by members and users of the Justin.tv website.

Justin.tv (which did not immediately respond to a request for comment) calls itself "the easiest way to create live video and show anyone in the world." The site says that it respects copyright law and bans users who violate it.

Fight for the Troops 2 weigh-in: Mitrione and Hague get to know each other

All the UFC fighters on the Fight for the Troops 2 card are ready to go, but it looked like Matt Mitrione and Tim Hague were ready to thrown down on the stage during the weigh-in Ft. Hood in Killeen, Tx. (video).

After weighing in at a combined 516 pounds, the big boys got nose-to-nose (18:15 mark).

Mitrone, who generally fights around 253, was at a UFC career-high 260 while Hague was slimmer than normal at 256.5.

It was also worth keeping an eye on the condition of the fighters in the other heavyweight bout.

Joey Beltran, a blown up light heavyweight, looked doughy as usual. He's survived fighting at 230 with a little extra meat around his midsection, but his opponent Pat Barry has shown that if he blows up too much it can hurt his cause.

Barry weighed a UFC career-high 248 before his loss at UFC 115 to Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. He was between 233-237 during his first three UFC fights. Today, he weighed in at a more manageable 240.

The main event fighters, Evan Dunham and Melvin Guillard both arrived on weight as did the remaining 18 fighters.

Mike Guymon and DaMarques Johnson produced one of the goofiest weigh-in staredowns in the history of fighting, as both fighters smiled for the camera (9:10 mark).

Yves Edwards was also in a relaxed mood. He made weight while eating potato chips on the scale and was even nice enough to offer Cody McKenzie a few chips (10:45 mark).

Let's not leave out the Octagon girls. Those camouflage numbers were pretty nice.

MAIN CARD

Evan Dunham (156) vs. Melvin Guillard (155)
Tim Hague (256.5) vs. Matt Mitrione (260)
Mark Hominick (145.5) vs. George Roop (145)
Pat Barry (240) vs. Joey Beltran (230)
Cole Miller (155.5) vs. Matt Wiman (155)

McKenzie is 'not that athletic,' but plans on finishing Edwards

Cody McKenzie made his name on the 12th season of "The Ultimate Fighter," showing off a nasty guillotine that he renamed the "McKenzie-tine." He gets another chance to pull it off against Yves Edwards at "Fight for the Troops" on Saturday, but he still considers himself unathletic.

McKenzie has 11 straight wins by guillotine, not including his wins on TUF. He'll have his hands full with MMA veteran Yves Edwards, whose last submission loss was to Mark Hominick at UFC 58.

N.Y. Post video report: 'How can you regulate it so that there isn't serious injuries?'

The UFC's big press conference at Madison Square Garden unveiled a nice show of support. Scott O'Neil, President of Madison Square Garden Sports, is squarely behind the effort as was N.Y. assemblyman Dean Murray. There was little opposition in the room. As a result, no debate ensued.

There was one interesting moment when Megan Paznik asked this:

"If you're adding kicking and punching to mixed martial arts, how can you regulate it so that there isn't serious injuries?"

Dana White was so thrown off he had a tough time answering the question. He turned to referencing the fact that there hasn't been a death in the history of the UFC. The easiest approach would've been to mention that boxing, football and hockey are all contact sports to a certain degree and there really is no way to guarantee a sport is free of injuries. It's also worth noting that elements of MMA like Judo, karate, boxing, jiu-jitsu and wrestling are all legal in New York. Why would a combination of those disciplines be illegal?

Paznik went on to voice this video. Yes, there is a dogfighting comparison and the producer of the video made sure to include plenty of violent looking images.

The Truth About Trading Tomorrow for Today

For 15 years, Frank Shamrock suffered through the bumps, bruises, and breaks that come along with being a pro fighter, and he never had to wonder whether it was worth it.

Not until one afternoon when he was on his living room floor, trying to help his baby daughter learn to walk. A sudden back spasm struck him - one of many in a career plagued with lower back problems - and briefly paralyzed him on the floor.

"My daughter was around one [year old] at the time, so she didn't know what was going on," Shamrock said. "But I was like, I can't even get up to help her, so I'm not sure how much more of this I should be doing. That's about when I decided to stop."

UFC pulls rabbit out of the hat with TUF 13 'Lesnar vs. dos Santos'

The UFC looked like it was backed into a corner for Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter." The bantamweights weren't an option. Chael Sonnen's away-from-the-Octagon nonsense dashed the plan of having him coach against Wanderlei Silva.

What was left?

It was pointed out earlier in the day that Brock Lesnar made sense, but could Dana White get the cranky former champ to spend seven weeks in Las Vegas? Not only did White pull off the coup of Lesnar on TUF 13, he also got Junior dos Santos as the other coach.

Lesnar and dos Santos will hit the ground in Las Vegas some time in the next two weeks to begin taping for TUF 13. They'll oversee a crew of welterweights.

The TUF 13 Finale comes on June 4 in Las Vegas. Lesnar and JDS will meet shortly after that on a pay-per-view card in June. White said everything came together when Velasquez went down for 6-to-8 months because of shoulder surgery.

"There were a lot of people we were looking at, and then, boom. Cain Velasquez gets hurt," White said. "And I was literally driving to work one morning and I said, 'You know what? This makes sense. Let's see if we can do this.'"

White hinted that getting Lesnar to commit to what will turn out to be a massive time commitment wasn't easy. He also knows the work of managing the big guy's mood has just begun.

"I'm already prepared mentally – it's going to be a tough season," White said. "I deal with Brock in very short spurts. The guy fights two to three times a year, and it's always tough. It's going to be an interesting six weeks of filming. ... (Brock) is not exactly a happy-go-lucky guy. Who knows what's going to happen this season. I do know it's going to be very interesting to see."

White told the media today that the deal was finalized about 10 days ago. He was thrilled to see all the speculation especially in regards to Lesnar's hunger to fight on after his rough loss to Velasquez. Lesnar has a chance to prove he can take a punch without turning and running. JDS is one of the top strikers in the world at heavyweight. The winner of their fight is slated to meet Velasquez upon his return.

Jones escapes car accident unscathed, will star in 'Unbreakable 2'*

UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones escaped disaster on Wednesday, walking away from a car accident just weeks before his bout with Ryan Bader at UFC 126. He tweeted a picture of his car afterwards, and said that the other driver had to be taken away in a stretcher.

This was a stroke of luck for Jones, because the bout with Bader is key to both men's careers. They have both risen through the ranks of the UFC, seemingly on a collision course. But was it luck? Or is he ... unbreakable?

In a rough and tumble sport like MMA, Jones has suffered very few injuries or cuts. Though he's broken an opponent's face, Jones has never even had a medical suspension for his UFC bouts. That could be because he is young and in excellent condition, or it's because he's the inspiration for the 2000 M.Night Shymalan movie "Unbreakable."

*He's not actually starring in "Unbreakable 2," because I'm pretty sure "Unbreakable" was too terrible of a movie to duplicate.

The list of all lists: MMA's top chick magnets

The blogosphere has turned into a daily bombardment of lists and slideshows. It's one of my least favorite things about the Internet. If you want to debate the greatest this and the all-time that, fire away. I'll pass for 99 percent of the time. The only lists I generally enjoy on the MMA side come from the fellas at Cage Potato. CP came up with another doozy as it went all Dirty.com chronicling the biggest [expletive] hounds in mixed martial arts.

Former UFC fighter Dean Lister is the first fighter listed:

Notable conquests: WWE star Milena Roucka (aka 'Rosa Mendes'), model Flavia Mazoni

Notes: 'The Boogeyman' is semi-retired from the sport these days, choosing instead to spend his time training hopeless cases. But in his prime, Dean Lister was just as notable for his ability to attract exotic beauties as he was for his in-cage exploits. Grappling ability plus a cartoonishly strong-looking jawline is a combination that women can't resist, apparently.

Didn't CP miss a few candidates? It's shocking to see Clay Guida omitted from the list. He got a ton of run around UFC 125 for living in a van down by the river. Brian Stann was asked if he was ever invited to the big RV that serves as Guida's home in Albuquerque. He responded by saying (2:40 mark), "I have not been to the Clay Guida RV. If I was better looking, maybe he'd invite me."

With guilty plea in mortgage fraud case, Sonnen should get probation and $10,000 fine

UFC fighter Chael Sonnen is currently serving the last few months of a steroid suspension in California. He's expected to return to active fighting sometime in the spring or is he?

According to the Lake Oswego Review, his battle versus the federal government has ended with a guilty plea to money laundering:

A licensed Realtor from West Linn, Sonnen admitted before a judge Monday that he conducted a financial transaction designed to hide or disguise the ownership and control of proceeds of mortgage fraud, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

Update: According to the Oregonian, as part of his guilty plea, Sonnen agreed to give up his realtor's license and pay a $10,000 fine. The government is recommending two years probation.

Update II - Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer reports (Audio - 1:40 mark) that Sonnen is turning state's evidence. He's also scheduled to fight Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128 in New Jersey on March 19.

The IRS issued a public statement:

"West Linn residents, and other residents throughout the Portland-Vancouver area, can rest assured knowing that federal law enforcement agencies take mortgage fraud very seriously because it played a major role in almost crippling this nation’s banking system just a few years ago," said Marcus Williams, a special agent in charge of IRS criminal investigations for the Pacific Northwest.

Money laundering carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Sonnen's sentencing is scheduled for March 28.

Update III - Here is the full release from the U.S. Attorney's Office on Oregon. Sonnen's conspired with a mortgage broker to falsify repair work.

Sonnen, a licensed realtor in the State of Oregon, admitted that a financial transaction he conducted was designed to conceal or disguise the ownership and control of the proceeds of wire fraud. The scheme involved Joel Rosabal and Chadwick Amsden, employees of Crown Point Enterprises, dba Lighthouse Financial Group (Lighthouse), a mortgage brokerage service based principally in Vancouver, Washington, with operations in Oregon and elsewhere. Rosabal and Amsden submitted a materially false loan application on the buyer’s behalf to Decision One Mortgage, a subprime lending institution that is now defunct, for the purchase of residential property located at 11249 SE Rolling Hills Lane, Portland, Oregon. Sonnen acted as the realtor for the transaction. Sonnen submitted a false letter and Sales Agreement Addendum instructing the title company to pay loan proceeds to a plumbing company for repairs to the home. In fact, Sonnen knew and had negotiated with Rosabal that no repairs would be performed on the home and the funds designated to the plumbing company would instead be paid to the buyer as a cash incentive to purchase the home. This agreement was not disclosed to Decision One Mortgage. Once the loan was funded, the title company paid over $69,000 to the plumbing company and the plumbing company, in turn and at Sonnen’s direction, paid $65,000 to the buyer of the home.

Sonnen referenced a battle vs. the federal government during a recent interview with HDNet's Mike Straka (0:43 mark), but made no mention of this specific case.

Junior dos Santos Favored to Beat Brock Lesnar

by Michael David SmithBrock Lesnar is no longer viewed as the baddest man on the planet by the betting public.

Lesnar, who has entered the Octagon as the betting favorite in every one of his UFC fights, is actually the underdog for his June bout against Junior dos Santos, which was announced on Tuesday. Bodog lists dos Santos as the favorite at -160 and Lesnar as the underdog at +130.

That says a lot about what the beating Lesnar took at the hands of Cain Velasquez did to Lesnar's reputation. When Lesnar tapped out 90 seconds into his first UFC fight, against Frank Mir, it was easy to write that off as an inexperienced fighter making a mistake against a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt. But the Velasquez fight? That was a good, old-fashioned butt kicking.

Guillard and the UFC honored to be fighting for the troops

The military has given to him, so Melvin Guillard is happy to give back. The same goes for UFC president Dana White.

The promotion is just a few days away from putting on its third fight card on a U.S. military base. This time it's Ft. Hood in Texas and the UFC is hoping to exceed the $4 million it raised in late 2008 with a fight card in Fayetteville, N.C.

"I'm going to give these guys a show," Guillard said during the "Fight for the Troops 2" teleconference. "You know, they work so hard to protect us every year, year after year. Some of them give up going overseas and got to live there for years at a time. And, you know, this is a blessing for me to even be asked to give a performance that I'm going to give these guys next week -- and guys and girls. So to me, it's just all part of being an American and I'm honored."

Guillard knows first hand of the sacrifice.

"I stay right now in Albuquerque with Staff Sergeant Chris Molina and his family. This is where I stay when I come here. So, you know, getting the military experience of staying with families, you know, seeing what these guys go through to protect our country, I've actually had chances to visit certain military bases and I also have a ton of friends in high school that got out of high school that’s in military, whether it's Marine Corps or Army or Air Force or whatever," said Guillard.

White decided Ft. Hood was a good spot this time around after seeing the work done by the Fisher family in Texas and around the country.

"What happened was we got invited down there and I went down. It was the first time I'd ever seen anything like that -- when I visited the hospital and what these guys, you know, the Fisher family who started this thing, what they’ve done for the troops here fighting in the United States, it's -- I can't even -- I can't put it into words for you. When these kids get injured, you know, you’ve got these 18-, 19-, 20-year-old kids that are getting injured over there -- they come back, it's sad to say but the government doesn’t take care of them, which is mind boggling," said White.

"So this family has put together this thing where -- and if you're a parent of one of these kids, I mean anybody who's on this call who has kids can understand. Your kid gets his arms, legs blown off, his face is melted -- the horrible things that happen to these guys -- and they're laying in a hospital bed out in the middle of Nowhere, Virginia, what do you do? You know what you do? You quit your job, you lose everything you have and you drive out there and you live in your car and you sit in a chair in the bed next to them."

The UFC raised $4 million around Fight for the Troops 1 and is hoping to eclipse that number this time. The proceeds this year will benefit the 53 Fisher Houses around the U.S. and in Germany and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

"Fight for the Troops" goes down this Saturday on Spike (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Offering to bring two fights a year to N.Y., UFC gets strong support

The economy sucks everywhere. Governmental budgets are being slashed as everyone looks to tighten their belts. New York is no different. The Empire State is looking for new revenue streams, yet its still holding on to the silly view that mixed martial arts is beyond regulation and licensing.

Dean Murray, a N.Y. State Assemblyman, was one of several high ranking officials to attend yesterday's UFC Madison Square Garden press conference/MMA rally.

"The fact of the matter is, this another example of New York being a nanny state. We have to stop doing that. We have to give the choice," Murray during the presser (12:12 mark). "How many TV stations do you have? How many radio stations do you have? You have choices. By us not legalizing this, it's removing that option of all these, literally millions of fans in New York state, having a chance to see their hometown heroes fighting."

Dana White spoke about the impact of bringing two or three UFC events each year to New York.

"The financial study [that HR&A did] is incredibly conservative. In that study we priced tickets cheaper than New Jersey, and we bring a lot of money into that state. We also conservatively projected only two events -- one big PPV at Madison Square Garden, and one upstate, which would be a fight night or a finale or something like that." White told ESPN.com. "But who knows -- maybe we come into New York and we do three events, and you triple whatever that number is. It's absolutely insane and asinine for this not to be sanctioned."

The UFC president pointed out that he's not just fighting for his promotion to land in New York.

"When we're talking about the UFC coming to the state of New York, a lot of other mixed martial arts events will too. Which will create even more revenue. You're going to have all these other organizations that will come here and bring more money in and create more jobs," said White.

Scott O'Neil, the President of Madison Square Garden Sports, said he's a big fan of  MMA and gave a glowing report (2:45 mark) after watching UFC 111 in nearby Newark, N.J.

Jamie Springer of HR&A Advisors estimated that MMA would bring a $23 million impact to New York. The estimates were based on two UFC events each year in New York that would generate $16 million. An additional $7 million would come from 70 more MMA events each year in N.Y. Springer based that estimate on the number of fight cards in states like New Jersey, California and Pennsylvania.

Ty & Atiba Panasonic Short Skate Film

Here is a HD Vimeo link to a short skateboard film I made with Ty Evans. The film was made possible by Panasonic. They gave us two of their newest cameras, the DMC-GH2 and a bunch of lenses. We had 1 month to make a short film, so we called up some of the best from, Eric Koston, Andrew Reynolds, Paul Rodriguez, Vincent Alvarez, Tony Hawk and many more. Panda Bear made us an exclusive song that I started, and he finished, which was amazing opportunity to work with one of my favorite musicians. The camera is amazing and I really learned a lot from Ty Evans, who also edited the short film. Hope you enjoy! 1

Strikeforce Challengers 13: Woodley's game shows holes in clinch-fest win

There's been some talk of Tyron Woodley facing Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz in the near future. That hype may need to be dialed down a bit. Tarec Saffiedine didn't win tonight in Nashville, but he showed that Woodley needs a little more seasoning before he faces a top 10 welterweight. Woodley used his wrestling to keep the fight in close quarters and take a unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, in the main event of Strikeforce Challengers 13 in Nashville, Tenn.

"Tarec's a very tough guy. He's got some power, got some pop. I endured, I pressed him," Woodley told Showtime's Mauro Ranallo. "The game plan was to be dynamic, in and out."

There wasn't much out as Woodley worked his clinch game throughout the fight. He couldn't get the fight to the ground on several occasions, and Saffiedine scrambled so well off his back that Woodley couldn't take advantage of top control.

Woodley (8-0) got the slight nod in the first two rounds, but all that work along the cage sapped him, not Saffiedine. Originally from Belgium, Saffiedine was able to land the better strikes on the feet in the final round and threatened slightly on the ground as he worked for a kimura from the bottom.

Woodley was tired in the final round and took a lot of sloppy shots. He was also putting himself at risk by dropping his hands. These things happen when you're gassed.

Before anyone gets too down on Woodley, this was probably a case of Saffiedine showing off his own skill-set. He's a versatile kid and proved a lot by grappling on an even level with a former NCAA All-American wrestler.

The 24-year-old fighting out of Dan Henderson's Team Quest camp in Temecula, Calif., is now 10-3.

It was a night filled with decisions.

After a 2010 highlighted by awesome knockouts, Ovince St. Preux ran into a much better challenge than expected against Ron Humphrey. The former Tennessee linebacker still won, but the fight went the distance. It was the third win since the beginning of November for St. Preux, who admitted he may need a little break.

Daniel Cormier (7-0) remained unbeaten, but he also failed to finish veteran Devin Cole.

The night was stolen by the lone female fight as Amanda Nunes destroyed Julia Budd.

Nunes charged hard at the start of the fight and blasted Budd, a Muay Thai specialist, with a straight left. Budd hit the ground hard and her head slammed on the mat. Nunes was a killer. The 24-year-old Brazilian jumped on top and unloaded seven hammerfists. The ref jumped in to save Budd, who had gone limp. All that in just 14 seconds. Maybe Nunes could be a challenger down the road for 145-pound champion Cristiane Santos.

UFC set to announce TUF 13 coaches: Who will it be?

The UFC hasn't always been the most airtight unit in keeping big announcements a secret, but the promotion has been on lockdown when it comes to naming the coaches for Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

According to Fanhouse's Mike Chiappetta, Dana White, a late addition to today's Ultimate Fight Night 23 presser (5:15 p.m. ET), is going to announce the coaches.

Who will it be?

Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, Dominick Cruz, Miguel Torres, Urijah Faber, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are amongst the rumored names mentioned over the last month or so.

Faber is out. He's got a fight scheduled against Eddie Wineland in March. It's "official" because he's on the poster! Torres looks to be out with a fight schedule in three weeks at UFC 126.

Did Sonnen take himself out of the mix with his guilty plea in a real estate scam and subsequent suspension?

The heavyweights seem to be the strongest possibility. Did Dana White find a way to swindle Lesnar into spending seven weeks in Las Vegas? Mir or even Roy Nelson would be a great choice as the opposing coach.

Shane Carwin, on the shelf after of surgery, doesn't have a future fight booked yet. USA Today tracked Carwin's Twitter account where he said he agreed to a Nelson fight, but that was quickly scrapped by the promotion. He's now looking at a UFC 131 return in Vancouver in June.

Are we way off base? Maybe UFC is going to pull something off that we never expected.

MMAjunkie reported yesterday that the cast will be exclusively welterweights. Taping begins at the end of this month, with the first episode scheduled to air on Mar. 30.

Junkie also thinks Gray Maynard and Frank Edgar could be the coaches. The TUF 13 Finale is slated for June 4 in Las Vegas and UFC 131 is June 14.

Amanda Nunes: 'I Want to Fight Cyborg Tomorrow'

It was inevitable, once you stop and think about it. An aggressive Brazilian fighter in the Strikeforce 145-pound women's division comes in and knocks out her opponent in the first round of her Strikeforce debut, and the questions about (not to mention comparisons to) Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos start up before the cheers even die down.

That part didn't particularly surprise Amanda Nunes. But after putting away Julia Budd in just fourteen seconds at last Friday's Strikeforce: Challengers event, the irony is that now she has to learn a little patience.

"I want to fight Cyborg tomorrow, but my manager and trainers feel like I need to gain a little more experience before I fight for the championship," Nunes told MMA Fighting via email this week. "I've only been training MMA for three years and I am still learning every day. The day I step in the cage with Cyborg, I will be 100% prepared."

Overeem finishes Duffee in 19 seconds

Alistair Overeem is making this fight stuff look too easy. Just two weeks after muscling his way to a K-1 kickboxing title in Japan, he ran roughshod over former UFC super prospect Todd Duffee. Overeem walked straight ahead against the powerful puncher. He delivered a vicious knee to the body, a right to the side of the head and a left hook. That was it. Duffee collapsed into the ropes and Overeem spared him what could've been some nasty punishment. All that in just 19 seconds at Dynamite!! 2010 in Saitama, Japan.

Frankly, Duffee was in over his head. The 25-year-old is a solid prospect but he only had seven pro MMA fights under his belt. This was fight No. 46 for Overeem. The size difference was also alarming. Duffee is massive at 6-foot-3, 249 pounds, but Overeem looked like a giant and fought like one.

Fedor is back! Strikeforce heavyweight tournament, a coup for MMA in 2011

Many bloggers were skeptical about the possibility of Strikeforce putting together an eight-man tourney for its heavyweights. It looks like Scott Coker and Showtime have cut through the red tape. The heavyweight extravaganza could result in some of the best matchmaking of 2011!

The Canadian Press reported that Fedor Emelianenko Tweeted about his first-round fight. It'll be Antonio Silva on Feb. 12 in New Jersey. The former Strikeforce champ, regarded by many as the greatest heavyweight in the history of the sport, hasn't fought since his upset loss at the hands of Fabricio Werdum last June. Silva, a winner of two straight, has only lost one fight since 2006.

Update - FanHouse reports that the field is set:

The first two quarterfinal bouts will take place on Feb. 12, with Fedor Emelianenko taking on Antonio Silva, while Andrei Arlovski will face Sergei Kharitonov.

The other two quarterfinal bouts include
Brett Rogers facing Josh Barnett and current Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem taking on Fabricio Werdum, the last man to beat Emelianenko

The tourney will also include a cool feature for Strikeforce's up and coming heavyweights. Shane del Rosario, Lavar Johnson and Daniel Cormier may be involved in alternate bouts as insurance down the road for injured participants.

UFC still committed to bringing MMA to New York

UFC president Dana White and chairman Lorenzo Fertitta met with the press in New York City to make their commitment to the Big Apple clear. They announced via an online press conference that once MMA is regulated, the UFC will bring two shows to Madison Square Garden. According to studies from an independent researcher, those two shows would bring $23 million and more than 200 jobs to N.Y.

"By bringing UFC events to New York, the state will see a positive financial impact," White said. "The arenas will get to host major UFC events and local hotels, restaurants, and other businesses will attract new customers. They’ll look forward to the times we bring UFC to New York."

N.Y. assemblyman Dean Murray was on hand to talk politics, and the process that had to happen to get MMA legalized and sanctioned in his state. He will try to sway newly sworn-in governor Andrew Cuomo to include revenue from MMA in the state budget, which will give it an easier path. He is pushing for MMA's legalization because he wants the state to find new economic streams.

"In today's climate, we don't need to be raising taxes. We need a chance to raise revenue," Murray said.

But one thing was clear throughout the press conference -- the UFC's biggest hurdle in getting MMA in the Empire State was not effective lobbying or discussions of economic impact. It's the need for education.

White emphasized the process of education several times throughout the half-hour press conference, and then a reporter on-hand showed just why education about of MMA was needed, asking, "How will you regulate martial arts when you add in kicks and punches?"

White calmly pointed out that kicks and punches are part of MMA, one of the few sports regulated by the government, and that safety is always the first concern.
