Will Dana White drop F-bombs on the Oxford Union Society?

When Dana White travels to England for UFC 120, he will stop in at Oxford University. He will speak to the members of the world-renowned Oxford Union debating society. "Anyone who knows anything about me knows I always speak my mind and am very passionate about what I do, and the Oxford Union was founded on exactly those principles," White said in a statement released by UFC. "I'm looking forward to meeting the students, and I know they have a reputation for asking tough questions and expecting straight answers from their guests. That's exactly what they'll get from me."Yes, the same place that hosted Mother Teresa, Winston Churchill and Robert Kennedy will now host the foul-mouthed chief of the UFC. White isn't afraid to speak up, a trait that has gotten him in trouble from time to time. But how will the Union members respond to White's tactics?Though they have been around since 1823, the members of the Oxford Union aren't all fuddy-duddies. A bar is part of their facilities. MMA has exploded in popularity in England, and the Oxford members likely have plenty of questions for White about the sport. Not only that, Churchill was known to drop a dirty word or two in his day.

Diaz cuts Davis then submits him at UFC 118

Fighting in front of a hostile crowd, Nate Diaz submitted hometown fighter Marcus Davis with a guillotine at 4:02 in the third round of their bout at UFC 118 in Boston on Saturday night. Diaz taunted Davis, and Davis answered it with a series of punches that briefly knocked Diaz to the ground. Diaz survived the exchange, and though Davis won the exchange, he sustained a cut just below his left eye brow. The two continued tight stand-up as the round went on. Davis' eye bled profusely throughout the round.Davis' eye was checked between rounds, and the doctor let the fight continue. In the second round, Davis continued boxing as well as he could with buckets of blood in his eye. Diaz kept his distance, using his reach advantage to stay far away from Davis' dangerous punches. Near the end of the round, Davis took Diaz down but was immediately reverse.Between rounds, Davis' eye was shown on the big screen and caused a large groan at the TD Garden. The cut continued to bleed, and Davis eye was nearly swollen shut.Diaz continued to batter Davis' face in the third and final round, and took him down with 90 seconds left in the fight. Diaz sunk in a guillotine that was so tight, it put Davis to sleep. Referee Yves Levigne saw that Davis was out and called the fight over with less than a minute to go.This is Diaz's second win at welterweight, but he said he still wants to move back down to lightweight. "I want to fight back at 155 with guys like Gray Maynard. They think they're hot shots," Diaz said after the fight.Diaz's last loss was in January to Maynard.

How Do You Solve a Problem Like Antonio?

It's fitting that we've spent so much time discussing wrestlers and wrestling on MMA Fighting this week, since tonight marks the return of Antonio McKee in a fight that he claims could be his last.

According to McKee, who has unapologetically bored MMA fans from Tokyo to New Jersey throughout his 11-year career, if his fight with Luciano Azevedo at MFC 26 goes the same way almost all of his other fights have gone (i.e. resulting in a decision victory and an anaesthetized crowd) he'll retire.

As he told me back in July: "I said, if this fight goes to a decision and it's a boring decision, I retire. If this fight is not the fight of the night, I retire. Basically, if I don't go out there and put on a show, just destroy and annihilate this guy, then I'm done."

Why? Not because he doesn't think he can compete anymore. He's pretty sure he can not only compete, but more or less dominate any other lightweight on the planet, even at 40 years old.

No, he says he'll quit because he's been waiting for the sport to evolve, and, at least as far as he's concerned, it hasn't.

Boxers like Arreola worried about Toney hurting the sport's rep

The mixed martial arts world is salivating over seeing James Toney enter the Octagon this weekend at UFC 118. Finally a boxer has backed up his smack talk about MMA and putting his skills on the line against Randy Couture. Why are fans excited? Because most of them expect Toney to get destroyed and potentially embarrassed. That possibility has many boxers worried.  "Of course, I got his back regardless. But I kind of feel like it's kind of disrespectful man," said heavyweight boxing contender Chris Arreola. "Let's just say he doesn't succeed, and (then) every MMA person is going to be like 'see, he couldn't cut it.' Every guy who loves MMA, they're going to be saying that boxing ain't nothing compared to MMA."Boxers Victor Ortiz, Shane Mosley, Ricardo Mayorga and promoter Gary Shaw are featured in the video from FightHubtv.com. They don't sound too confident in Toney's chances. David Haye and Bernard Hopkins have the same worries as well.  Much like Toney's trainer Dan Goossen, Arreola is annoyed that Randy Couture won't be reciprocating and entering a boxing ring. "Let's
do the same, why don't you bring Brock Lesnar in the boxing ring with
myself or any of the klitschko brothers? Bring Brock Lesnar into boxing,
let's see what happens to him," said Arreola. "He'll get knocked the
[expletive] out. It's two different beasts."It's that thinking, and it is accurate, that makes the whole "boxing versus MMA" promotional angle a bit of a farce. But as most of the boxing people tracked down by Marcos Villegas said, you never know what can happen with the four-ounce gloves.

Lauzon appreciated the long layoff between fights

As Joe Lauzon fought Sam Stout at UFC 108, I remember thinking, "Lauzon doesn't look like himself." He was returning from a knee injury and a 10-month layoff, but it still didn't explain why Lauzon looked so lifeless in the decision, which he lost. Lauzon says that the knee was partly to blame. He told the Boston Herald: "My last fight camp kind of got me into normal shape and this fight camp is really elevating me to being fight-ready. Right after the fight I really didn’t take any time off. . . . I’m definitely ready. I’ve had more than enough time."This is Lauzon's first fight since then, meaning he had a nine-month layoff right after he had a 10-month layoff. Instead of being concerned about ring rust, Lauzon thinks that the time off has helped him. He used it to train more, heading to Hawaii to work with his one-time coach on "The Ultimate Fighter," B.J. Penn. Now, Penn is on Lauzon's turf. A lifelong Boston native, Lauzon will be fighting in front of a hometown crowd, and finally welcomed Penn to his gym. Both fighters are coming off of a loss and claiming to be revitalized. We'll see if it's true this Saturday.

Eric Larkin Impresses, Carey Vanier Gets Away With One at Bellator 28

Filed under: Bellator, NewsFour-time All-American wrestler and NCAA Division I champ Eric Larkin wrapped up his third straight MMA victory in as many tries at Bellator 28 in New Orleans on Thursday night.

Larkin got off to a quick start, dropping Marcus Andrusia with a surprise head kick in the opening seconds, then adding some vicious ground-and-pound as Andrusia struggled to regain his bearings. After taking a beating in the half-guard, Andrusia attempted to sit up and got caught in a tight guillotine choke from Larkin, forcing Andrusia to submit at 2:46 of round 1.

"I actually had a coach text me today and say, 'Hey, you should throw the head kick. He'll never expect it.' And I landed it," Larkin said after the victory.

Lentz takes slow-paced fight against Winner at UFC 118

The Boston crowd didn't like this one. And the television audience watching on Spike probably couldn't have enjoyed it much either. Using a plodding style Nik Lentz isn't broke the spirit of Andre Winner halfway through the fight and was able to pull the upset on the runner-up from Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter". Lentz took a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, for his third win in the UFC.Lentz (20-3-2, 3-1 UFC) had zero interest in trading punches and kicks with Winner, who is one of the faster strikers in the lightweight division. His goal the entire fight was to score the takedown. He wasn't very successful until the final round but he was able to control Winner by clinching with him against the cage. In the third, Winner (11-4, 2-2 UFC) finally hit the deck and had trouble getting up. Lentz scored the mount with a minute left in the fight but didn't do much with it. Asking where the rest of the details are? There was much beyond that to describe.  Non-televised results: Mike Pierce def. Amilcar Alves via submission (cross-body armbar) - Round 3, 3:11.Greg Soto def. Nick Osipczak via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).Dan Miller def. John Salter via submission (anaconda choke) - Round 2, 1:53.

NY assemblyman Bob Reilly: Violence is not good for society

Hey, do you want to listen to someone ignorant but powerful speak about MMA? Here you go! New York assemblyman Bob Reilly is a guest on HDNet's Inside MMA on Friday evening, and he says that the violence in the cage is not good for society. He tries to address violence in other sports, like football and boxing, but is unsuccessful at explaining how the violence on the football field is different than the violence in the cage. We've discussed Assemblyman Reilly and his lack of understanding of MMA several times before, so there is no need to rehash why he is wrong. I give Reilly credit for meeting his opponents on their field, but it's a shame that he didn't walk in with an open mind.Watch the full report on Inside MMA on HDNet at 9 p.m. ET.

Carwin steroid story still escaping the spotlight

The media around UFC 118 is wrapped up in the event and the fights but there is a pretty big story brewing in the background. It was less than two weeks ago that Shane Carwin was named by a federal prosecutor as a customer of a steroid-dealing pharmacist. Carwin has chosen to stay mum on the topic and UFC Dana White doesn't feel comfortable speaking on the subject without more facts. "I don’t know enough about it to go into it in depth," White told Fanhouse's Ariel Helwani. "But, I know he came up on
like a BALCO-type list. On a list of guys who did it. But, this guy’s [Carwin]
fought in the UFC a long time, under regulation and has never tested positive
for anything. We’ll see how
this whole thing plays out."Yahoo! Sports' Dave Meltzer says using recent testing results, to give athletes accused of using steroids a pass, doesn't wash anymore. The current testing system means nothing in most states and in the states
like Nevada where it is legit, you still know well ahead of time the day you are
being tested. They do have the power to test you off season, but it's rarely
done, and if you aren't a top guy headlining a show in the next two months,
there is no fear of it happening. California was very real before, but when you
go from people failing tests nearly every weekend to nobody failing tests for
months, either everyone smartened up at once or something has changed.  Meltzer wrote in Pro Wrestling Observer that he's always had suspicions about Carwin (pictured in early 2008 when he initially signed with the UFC).  When I met (Shane Carwin) in 2006, he was 289 ripped and when I asked him if
he could cut to 265 (the weight he'd need to be for UFC), he laughed and said
there was no way he could. Two years later, he was in UFC and fighting at 254
without cutting and physically he looked like a completely different person.
Meltzer said fighters believe that many of the top competitors in the sport are using some of sort of performance enhancing drug. My feeling from talking with someone who
directly distributed is that the people who say everyone or 90% of the top
fighters are on them are people covering up for their own insecurities and
justifying usage. That said, the percentage is significant. Dennis Hallman was on Inside MMA (video - 38:00 mark) a
few weeks ago and said it was no less than 50 percent. When going through fighters
at one prominent gym from someone who knew, person by person, we did end up
right at 50 percent and again, some who did and didn't from that list would surprise
you.
Meltzer thinks anyone who says steroids or PED's make little difference is being foolish.  But the point is, steroids do
change the game (one fighter who is very sophisticated on use noted to me about
certain opponents that he's trained with both on and off and he mentioned one
guy as almost a world beater on when he trained with him and he was `nothing'
off, and talked about being genuinely scared of another fighter-keep in mind
this was in a non-drug tested environment--who was a very dangerous and actually
legendary striker at any weight and had in a very short period of time had
suddenly packed on 20 extra pounds of muscle and completely changed his
body. We're never going to get resolution on the Carwin story. He'll come back, address it quickly and the story will get buried just like it has with James Toney, who is fighting on the card this weekend. Toney tested positive after his win over John Ruiz back in 2005 and served a 90-day suspension. Most MMA fans have no idea of Toney's history with PED's.Hopefully down the road, more comprehensive testing for steroids and HGH (that means everyone on the card) will be put in place and the worries, about who's on and who's not, will be alleviated. It's certainly made a difference in baseball. The 50 home run, 145 RBI seasons have been replaced by very 70's-like 32 HR, 110 RBI seasons. It must be the improvement in pitching, right? Baseball finally instituted real testing and up next is a reliable test for HGH. MMA and boxing need to follow suit.  Meltzer tip via Bloody Elbow

Roller coaster of fights: The ups and downs of Kenny Florian

Kenny Florian will fight Gray Maynard in his hometown of Boston this weekend. The winner will get a shot at the UFC lightweight title. If it's Florian, it will be his third bite at the title apple. For someone with so much success, Florian has faced some ups and downs. Hill: Dana White was at a fight in Massachusetts to scout Drew Fickett. Though Fickett won, his opponent, Florian, caught White's eye. Florian was casted in a new reality show where the winner would get a contract with the UFC.Valley: On the much-touted season finale of the first season of that reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter," Florian was man handled by Diego Sanchez, losing in a first-round TKO.Hill: Florian rebounded from the Sanchez loss with three wins, all stoppages: a TKO of Alex Karalexis, and submissions of Kit Cope and Sam Stout. That earned Florian a shot at Sean Sherk and the vacant lightweight title. Valley: That first title shot didn't work out so well. At UFC 68, Sherk didn't let Florian's elbows bother him and controlled Florian for a unanimous decision.  Hill: After losing that first title shot, Florian had to climb back up the lightweight ladder. That started with wins over Dokonjonosuke Mishima, Alvin Robinson and Din Thomas -- all submissions.  Bigger Hill: Florian headlined UFC Fight Night 13 in a bout with fellow Bostonian, Joe Lauzon. Florian avoided Lauzon's submission attempts with deadly elbows, winning by TKO. He followed that up with a decision at UFC 87 over the UFC's hottest lightweight prospect, Roger Huerta. Not exactly fighting but still a hill: Florian filled in for as a commentator for Frank Mir at WEC 41 to rave reviews, which opened the door for Florian to do more broadcast work for ESPN, the UFC and the WEC. Mountain: Florian was promised another title shot if he got through Joe Stevenson. He gets what he wants after submitting Stevenson in the first round at UFC 91. After the fight, he calls out UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn with the now-famous, "I want B.J.'s belt!"Valley: Headed into UFC 101 and his second title shot, Florian was flying high. Unfortunately, Penn brought him back to earth with a beating that ended with a rear naked choke in the fourth round.  Hill: Rear naked chokes over Takanori Gomi and Clay Guida helped bring Florian closer to a title shot, and to the fight with Maynard. What do you think this weekend will be for Florian, a hill or valley?

Oleinik, Vega, Ward Advance in Bellator Tournaments

by Michael David SmithAlexey Oleinik, Jose Vega and Lisa Ward all won to advance to the semifinals of their respective Bellator Fighting Championships Season 3 tournaments Thursday night at Bellator 26 in Kansas City.

In a bloody mess of a fight in the heavyweight tournament, Oleinik and Mike Hayes slugged it out for 15 minutes. It wasn't an easy fight to score, and could have gone either way, but two judges scored it 29-28 Oleinik while one scored it 29-28 Hayes. It's a good thing for Bellator that Oleinik got the decision, as Hayes had a nasty cut on his right eye that likely would have prevented him from moving on to the semifinals.

As it is, Oleinik will face Neil Grove in one semifinal fight, while Cole Konrad will face Damian Grabowski in the other heavyweight tournament semifinal. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Trevor Sherman Hopes to Keep Training James Toney in MMA

by Michael David SmithAfter a two-decade career as a professional boxer, James Toney looked like a fish out of water in his mixed martial arts debut on Saturday night, and UFC President Dana White said after Randy Couture overwhelmed Toney that the UFC was done experimenting with professional boxers.

But Trevor Sherman, the man who trained Toney for MMA, said he doesn't want Toney to quit the sport, even if he has to fight in a second-tier MMA promotion.

"I still love James," Sherman said. "I hope he doesn't stop doing MMA, and if the UFC does release him ... trust me -- there's plenty of interest." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

UFC 118: Demian Maia Beats Mario Miranda

by Michael David SmithDemian Maia returned to the Octagon for the first time since being humiliated by Anderson Silva in April, defeating Mario Miranda by unanimous decision at UFC 118.

It wasn't a pretty fight, but it was a fight that Maia won handily, winning all three rounds on all three judges' cards.

Early in the fight Maia took Miranda to the ground and proceeded to methodically advance his position and get Miranda's back. Maia is one of the best Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioners in the world, and it seemed just a matter of time before Maia would win by submission. But Miranda did a nice job of wriggling free and standing back up after a couple minutes of Maia controlling him. The rest of the round was fought standing up without either fighter doing much damage, but Maia clearly won the round because he controlled the action on the ground.

off, and talked about being genuinely scared of another fighter-keep in mind
this was in a non-drug tested environment--who was a very dangerous and actually
legendary striker at any weight and had in a very short period of time had
suddenly packed on 20 extra pounds of muscle and completely changed his

Ward, Vega and Oleinik move on in Bellator tourneys

Bellator's third season chugged along, making a stop in Kansas City on Thursday night for women's, bantamweight and heavyweight tournament bouts.  Lisa Ward earned a spot in the semifinals of Bellator's women tournament with unanimous decision over Aisling Daly. She won all three round on all three judges cards. Ward took Daly down early in the first round, and controlled the fight throughout the round. Ward used her positioning to rain down punches at every opportunity. This pattern continued throughout the rest of the fight, with Ward using her wrestling skills to control Daly's every move.  With that win, Ward joins Megumi Fujii, Zoila Frausto and Jessica Aguilar in the semifinals of the Bellator tournament.  Vega takes out Tims Jose Vega moved on in the Bellator bantameight tournament with a unanimous decision win over Danny Tims, with the judges seeing it 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 for Vega. Their fight featured non-stop action. Tims knocked Vega down early in the first round, but couldn't keep Vega down. Vega reversed position, and controlled and inflicted damage on Tims. Any time Tims looked like he could gain an advantage, Vega would use his wrestling to take it away.Vega is the first fighter to make the Bellator bantamweight semifinals. Oleinik survives bloody battle Alexey Oleinik took the final spot in the heavyweight tournament with a split decision win over Mike Hayes. Oleinik took the bloody decision 29-28, 28-29, 29-28.Oleinik spent much of the fight on his back, but controlled Hayes' wrists and caused damage from the bottom. However, he wasn't able to finish off Hayes. This task became more difficult after Hayes sustained a cut on his eyelid in the third round.  Oleinik will likely face Neil Grove in the semifinals, while Cole Konrad will fight Damian Grabowski. In a non-tournament bout, Steve Carl somehow lasted a through a tight Tyler Stinson triangle choke to win by a technical submission. After getting out of triangle, Carl sunk in a guillotine that choke Stinson unconscious at 2:30 of the first round. This bout was non-tournament, but Carl likely earned himself a spot in Bellator's next welterweight tournament with the win.

Surf Artist - Daina Scarola

Introducing Daina Scarola, an artist in Nova Scotia, Canada. Daina explains her latest series of round surf art oil paintings…"...They pull together all the subjects I've loved painting over the years - flowers, landscapes, figures, textures - combined with my connection to the ocean and nature. Subtle backgrounds are suggested with textured prints on paint or as imprints in gesso - clouds, foliage, waves - using wooden textile print blocks to create this effect, each chosen carefully for its pattern. My paintings resonate a kind of nostalgic vintage art-nouveau twist on the classic pin-up girls and retro cars set against lazy summer beach days. This is the expression and representation of the powerful pull on our heartstrings to the ocean tides, as an experience, a lifestyle, a feeling, a memory, or desire. The round canvas is symbolic and represents this life as non-linear. It has no boundaries, no corners."www.clubofthewaves.com/artistprofiles/daina_scarola.htmlwww.artbydaina.com

UFC 118: Frankie Edgar Beats B.J. Penn

by Michael David SmithWhen Frankie Edgar beat B.J. Penn in April to win the UFC lightweight title, many fans thought it was a fluke. But Edgar did it again on Saturday at UFC 118, winning another unanimous decision and showing without a doubt that he's the best lightweight in mixed martial arts.

This time around it wasn't even close, with Edgar winning all five rounds on all three judges' cards.

"I want to thank B.J.," Edgar said afterward. "He brought the best out of me.".

UFC 118 weigh-in: 237 pounds! Did Toney take this seriously?

What happened to all the hard work? We heard James Toney had gotten himself into shape. You can crow about being in the best condition of your life but the scale doesn't lie. Toney stepped on stage Friday at the UFC 118 weigh-in and checked in at a ridiculous 237 pounds. That matches his heaviest weight ever as a boxer. It's 20 pounds heavier than his last boxing match just 11 months ago against Matthew Greer. Keep in mind, Toney spent most of his boxing career between 160-175 pounds. At barely 6-feet tall, 237 pounds is a lot to carry. Toney takes on the UFC legend Randy Couture on Saturday night and needs to be light on his feet, try to avoid Couture's takedowns and take advantage of the speed in his hands. Toney didn't help his cause by showing up at a blubbery 237. And with all the smack-talking Toney has done lately, this certainly doesn't look good for the 42-year-old boxer. Also not looking good was Toney as he removed his pants (pictured to the right). He gave the crowd at the TD Garden a little extra show when part of his rear end was exposed. The MMA fans in attendance let loose a hearty laugh.  Many experts already weren't giving Toney a chance, anyway. Couture has been installed a minus-800 favorite to win the fight. Even
UFC president Dana White admits that he's out to make an example of
Toney, who's been talking trash about mixed martial artists and White for years."What people don't realize is that this started back in 2002," White told the Opie and Anthony Show on XM. "When we first bought the company, when Tito Ortiz was the big name in the UFC at that time. (Toney) came out and started talking all sorts of smack about the UFC and Tito. He wanted to fight one of these guys back then." Toney turned up the heat at the end of 2009 when he stalked White before UFC 107. Less than a month later, he crashed the postfight press conference at UFC 108 in Las Vegas. Toney holds a boxing record of 72-6-3, but will step into the Octagon for the first time. Couture enters the fight with 28 professional MMA fights. He was also an Olympic-level wrestler throughout his 20's. Toney just began working on his wrestling and other elements of MMA at the start of 2010. All 20 fighters made weight without any issues.  UFC 118 weigh-in (Courtesy MMA Junkie)Pay-per-view card Frankie Edgar (154) vs. B.J. Watch Joe Warren KO Joe Soto for Bellator featherweight title

As we wrote about last night, Joe Warren won the Bellator featherweight championship with a shocking comeback. Watch as Bellator commentator starts to say that he scored the first round 10-8 for Soto, then is interrupted by Warren's quick right to knock down Soto. With that, Warren won the Bellator featherweight title, proclaiming himself the "baddest man on the planet." In the space of a year and a half, he's moved from being a world champion wrestler to a champion fighter.

Heading into second decade of MMA, B.J. Penn wants more fights

When B.J. Penn steps in the cage to fight Frankie Edgar on Saturday night, it will be the 23rd time he's fought in a pro fight. He knows that he can't fight forever, so the "Prodigy" is starting to look at how to enjoy his life as a fighter while he can. If he gets through Edgar and wins the lightweight belt back, Penn wants to fight as often as he can. From MMAjunkie.com: "When I get past Frankie Edgar, I want to fight everybody," he said. "I'll fight the No. 1 contender all the way to the No. 15 contender. If no one's ready and they need more time to prepare for me, Dana, give me a welterweight fight. I don't care. "I just want to fight. I can't do this forever."At 31 years old, this is a smart move. He not only needs to fight -- and make money -- while he can, but fighting all-comers is also a way for him to cement his legacy. There is no doubt that Penn will be remembered as a pioneer of the UFC and an incredibly dominant champion. Jamming in as many fights as possible as his career nears its end will make Penn beloved.

Catching up with Gabe Ruediger for UFC 118

Though he has 17 wins, including 12 submissions, Gabe Ruediger has left two lasting impressions on most fight fans. One is when he was dismissed from "The Ultimate Fighter" for failing to make weight and two, when Melvin Guillard knocked him out with a body shot. But now, Ruediger wants to make a different impressions. Instead of being the guy who ate ice cream cake the night before a weigh-in, he wants to be the man who beats his TUF castmate Joe Lauzon.Since he's been out of the UFC, he has left Team Quest, rehabbed a neck injury, and claims he's in the best shape of his life.I was looking at pictures of the last UFC I was in and I can’t believe the difference in me. But everything, really. My striking is much improved. You look at a number of my recent wins, which came by submission, but I set them all up with punches. It has been a long, arduous journey. I’ve matured. I don’t think I was ready for TUF. Skills wise, I was. But mentally I let it get to me. I think if I would have gone far there I would have started partying and stuff. Now, I’m all about the fight.Ruediger got his chance at Lauzon because Terry Etim dropped out of the scheduled bout three weeks ago.

Joe Warren Stuns Joe Soto in Brilliant Bellator Title Fight

by Michael David SmithIn a classic fight for the Bellator bantamweight title, Joe Warren was beaten senseless for five minutes in the first round against Joe Soto, only to storm back and knock Soto out just 33 seconds into the second round.

It was one of the fights of the year, and a fight that showed that Warren, a world-class wrestler, also has an incredible chin and powerful striking.

"I had a bad first round," Warren said afterward. "I took a deep breath, got my focus back and pushed hard. You can't stop me. I'm the baddest man on the planet." Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

UFC 118 picks, Vegas-style: Who wins the overshadowed title fight?

B.J. Penn is always the star of the show but not this week at UFC 118. The Hawaiian lightweight legend has willingly taken a back seat to James Toney. The boxer's talk and promotional acumen has carried the card. But make no mistake about it, Toney against Randy Couture, from a pure fighting standpoint is a sideshow (Sherdog's pro's picks have it 50-3 for Couture) compared to the UFC lightweight title rematch between champ Frank Edgar and Penn. Penn lost the first matchup via unanimous decision back at UFC 112. In typical Penn fashion, he's tried to drum up some drama and angst heading into the fight but it's just not that easy against Edgar, who is pretty benign with the spoken word. So the issue again for Penn is motivation. Is he fired up? Will he alter his style and work harder for the victory? If not, he'll have two losses in a row and then what motivates him to come back and get better? Yahoo!

Dana White sits down with Mike Tyson to talk UFC 118

You think you're a big fight fan? You might get smoked in a conversation with Mike Tyson. The former heavyweight boxing champ loves his sport and is quickly becoming a huge fan of mixed martial arts. For him, the Randy Couture-James Toney fight is right up his alley. Tyson visited the Las Vegas office of UFC president Dana White to talk some boxing. When the conversation turned to James Toney, Tyson got pretty animated (2:13 mark)."I want to see this fight. Toney's a crazy guy," said Tyson. "He's a really dark, kinda crazy guy."If Toney wins at UFC 118, Tyson was interested to see if the UFC would book Brock Lesnar against the boxing great. Tyson follows the sport pretty closely. Last month, he told ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas that his favorite fighter is Fedor Emelianenko. He also has a lot of admiration for Lesnar, after the first round beating he took against Shane Carwin at UFC 116.  This is quite a coup for White and his videographer Eliot. Tyson is pretty picky when it comes to allowing photographs and videos.

UFC 118 not sold out yet; White surprised

MMA is on the rise, but it's not free from the affects of a lousy economy. UFC finally landing in Boston is a huge coup for the sport, but even a city hungry for fighting hasn't opened its wallets without some hesitation. Dan Duggan from the Boston Herald reports that UFC 118 needs a late push to sellout: Tickets went on sale June 25 and as of last weekend about 11,000 tickets had been sold. The Garden’s capacity for the event will be 15,500. UFC president Dana White, a Boston-native is surprised:  "I was shocked that we didn’t sell out,” White told the Herald Monday. "Everybody is telling me that things are rough back there." [...]"We think it’s going to sell out," White said. "I think we’re like a couple thousand away from it. But when we get down to a thousand, we consider that a sell out. We’ll do that from walkup (sales)."White is happy with the way the event has been marketed. "Everything is great," White said. "The fight card, the lead-up and now going there is all good stuff."He's probably got good reason to be confident that the card will sell out. The Boston media showed up in force Wednesday to cover the UFC 118 prefight press conference. Papers like the Herald and Boston Globe still have muscle in New England.

Three Stars: Showtime, Feijao and a dancing machine

With WEC 50 and Strikeforce: Houston in the books, Cagewriter takes a look at the fighters who stood out.No. 1 star -- Anthony Pettis: "Showtime" earned his shot at the WEC lightweight title with an amazing win over Shane Roller. Pettis and Roller fought a back and forth bout for more than 14 minutes. Then Pettis locked on a triangle choke, earning him his third win in a row. No. 2 star -- Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante: At Strikeforce: Houston, Feijao dethroned "King Mo" with a third-round TKO. Cavalcante won with the same powerful striking that had earned him the title shot. He used knees as an antidote to Lawal's takedowns, and will now get to defend the belt that Lawal couldn't. No. 3 star -- Dominick Cruz: In his first title defense, Cruz showed excellent movement, avoiding Benavidez's strikes while darting in to land strikes of his own. The five-round fight didn't slow him down, either. Next up? Scott Jorgensen, also a big winner at WEC 50.Honorable mention -- Daniel Cormier: Four weeks, three fights, two continents, one result. As we wrote last week, Cormier fought in his third fight in a month on Saturday, but you didn't see any wear and tear on the two-time Olympian. He ran through Jason Riley in 62 seconds, and is now free to sit on his couch and play video games.  Honorable mention -- Chad Griggs: The full-time firefighter with
mutton chops wasn't supposed to beat former professional wrestling star
Bobby Lashley, but that's exactly what he did. He used an uppercut to
first cut Lashley under the eye, then to set up the hammerfists that
TKOed Lashley. Dishonorable mention -- Texas State Athletic Commission: The state commission that oversaw Strikeforce:Houston did an abysmal job. Referee Jon Schorle stood up Bobby Lashley and Chad Griggs at a questionable time in the fight. He also hesitated in stopping the KJ Noons/Jorge Gurgel fight, looking as if he was going to step in, but then stopping. He then failed to recognize the illegal knee that Noons threw. To add to the troubles with refereeing, the state commission's timekeeper had troubles with the clock during the Jacare/Kennedy bout.  The UFC and Bellator both have events in early September in the Lone Star state. Hopefully, they'll get their act together by then.Who were your stars from WEC 50 and Strikeforce: Houston?

UFC 118: Gray Maynard Beats Kenny Florian

by Michael David SmithGray Maynard became the UFC's No. 1 lightweight contender Saturday at UFC 118, but he wasn't very exciting in the process.

Maynard beat Kenny Florian by unanimous decision, staying undefeated in his professional MMA career and controlling the fight with a wrestling style that is brutally effective but not particularly entertaining to the fans.

"I'd love to come back here and have you guys cheer for me some time," Maynard said as the fans booed him at the end of a fairly boring fight.

WEC Announces Signing of Chinese Lightweight Tiequan Zhang

Filed under: WEC, NewsIt didn't take long for Zuffa to puts its official stamp on mixed martial arts in Asia.

Following UFC 118, UFC president Dana White announced the company had set up an office in Beijing, China, and hired Mark Fischer, formerly of the NBA's China branch, to run its operations in Asia as executive vice president and managing director.

On Thursday, the WEC, the UFC's sibling promotion, officially announced the signing of lightweight Tiequan Zhang, of Beijing. Zhang will be the first fighter from mainland China in the WEC's history. His first task comes later this month against Alex Karalexis at WEC 51 in Broomfield, Colo.

Chuck Liddell shaves iconic mohawk for charity

UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell has had his mohawk for 18 years, but he shaved it all off Monday morning on "Fox and Friends." Now, he looks like this: Liddell shaved his head for a good cause. BIC, the makers of razors, is sponsoring BIC 4 GOOD and encouraging people to shave their head for charity. You can virtually shave your head or send in a video of you actually getting your head shaved here. Either way, BIC will make a donation to Do Something, a charity that encourages volunteerism among youth. Other popular stories on Yahoo! Noons destroys Gurgel but did he land several illegal shots?

Jorge Gurgel has had a bad habit of striking with strikers. A brilliant jiu-jitsu practitioner, he hadn't suffered devastating consequences until tonight. Gurgel played K.J. Noons' game and almost had his head knocked off. In the first three minutes of the fight, Gurgel was tagged by 20-of-44 shots. It only got worse from there. Noons nearly knocked out Gurgel with a left hook at the end of the first. Then at the start of the second, he finished it quickly when landed a nasty combination with straight right followed by a left hook. Referee Kerry Hatley stopped the fight at 0:19 of the second giving Noons the victory but it wasn't without controversy.  Once Noons dropped Gurgel, he looked to Hatley to save Gurgel. The ref hesitated so Noons unloaded with three more lefts on the helpless Gurgel. Then as the overmatched official listlessly moved in to stop the fight, Noons delivered a right knee. One problem, Gurgel was still on the ground. The blow was clearly illegal. Showtime color voice Mauro Ranallo screeched in protest. Texas officials apparently decided the knee was legal or simply didn't see it. When Showtime's Gus Johnson entered the cage he probed Noons with four questions but shied away from asking him about the illegal blow (pictured).  "Jorge is great opponent," said Noons (9-1). "He was staying away from my hands trying to get me into his gameplan but I have that killer instinct."There was also a question on the left hook that nearly knocked out Gurgel (13-7) at the end of the first. Showtime never showed a replay with sound. It appeared that the punch landed as the bell sounded. Ranallo and others thought it may have come just after the bell. In all, Noons landed 41-of-80 strikes while Gurgel was just 21-of-67. Clearly, Noons landed the heavier shots. Gurgel was bleeding around both eyes and his nose. He could barely stand at the end of the fight. Noons' face was unmarked.

Florian thinks Maynard's wrestling won't be enough to beat him

A title shot is on the line when Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard lock horns at UFC 118. UFC president Dana White confirmed that yesterday. The winner will get the victor from the B.J. Penn-Frank Edgar. This is a heck of an opportunity for Maynard, who enters the cage for just the 10th time in his career. Maynard has added to game over the years but he's still a wrestler by trade. The last time we saw Kenny Florian face an elite former college wrestler, he basically spent the entire time on his back against Sean Sherk. But that was almost four years ago and Florian is a much more well-rounded fighter now. Who's helped Florian shore up the holes in his wrestling game recently? UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre.  "I don't think you can get a better (training) partner at this point (to work on your wrestling). George really is at the top of his game. His wrestling is second to none," said Florian co-trainer Firas Zahabi, who is also the trainer for GSP (1:45 mark). "He's never competed as a wrestler, not very much (but) his wrestling, don't be mistaken, it's the best. Nobody's watched GSP train more than I have and I've seen him go with top level wrestlers and I'll tell you, he has taken everyone he's ever wrestled or sparred with down repeatedly."While on ProMMARadio (1:02:30 mark), Florian raved about how much St. Pierre has helped him with his grappling. "I consider him the best wrestler in mixed martial arts," said Florian (Audio clip). "He's about 200 pounds right now, very quick, very strong. I've been training with him for the last three fights. I know I'll be ready. Georges has helped me so much with my wrestling and overall game that I feel like this is the best point to meet a guy like Gray Maynard."   The transformation from solid jiu-jitsu and striking artist to a complete fighter hasn't happened overnight for Florian.  "Beating a guy like Gray or stopping his wrestling in one training camp is not going to happen. That's the reality of it. So I've been working on it for a long time now," said Florian (14-4, 11-3 UFC). "I've also been working a lot with John Cholish, who wrestled over at Cornell, he was an All-American there. I've been bringing a lot of guys in."   This fight could come down to Maynard's work with boxing coach Gil Martinez. If Maynard (9-0, 7-0 UFC) can't score the takedown then he'll need to outstrike Florian. That won't be easy. After working heavily over the last few years with boxing coach Peter Welch, Florian is a good volume puncher, who's broken down several opponents on the feet before getting them down and finishing fights via submission.

MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Penn Falls Out

by Michael David SmithWith his second straight unanimous decision loss to Frankie Edgar, B.J. Penn is no longer one of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

He's long been considered one of the truly elite fighters in mixed martial arts, but the soon-to-be 32-year-old Penn has looked in his two fights this year like he has slowed down. Penn is the greatest lightweight ever to fight in MMA, but even the greatest decline eventually.

So Penn isn't in my pound-for-pound Top 10 anymore. To find out who is, read on. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
