Strikeforce: Josh Thomson Beats JZ Cavalcante

by Michael David SmithJosh Thomson fought a tough, back-and-forth 15-minute battle with Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante at Saturday night's Strikeforce event and walked away with what will be a controversial unanimous decision in a fight that easily could have gone either way.

Thomson, who said afterward that he "fought like s**t," said he's hoping for a third fight with Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, with whom he's split two previous fights.

"Gilbert and I are good friends," Thomson said. "I'm looking forward to getting the title back. ... Everyone's waiting for the trilogy."

Camp Noons not afraid of Diaz and his "advanced patty-cake" boxing style

It could be the best "boxing" match in a cage we'll see the rest of 2010. The KJ Noons-Nick Diaz fight this Saturday on Showtime is such a contrast in striking styles, it has to deliver something spectacular.

Noons is a more classic boxer. He uses his jab well and showed big-time power against Conor Heun and Jorge Gurgel. Those guys are also both average-sized lightweights. Will Noons power be enough for Diaz, who walks around in the 185-pound range?

Diaz's high-volume style has worked against poor defensive fighters like Marius Zaromskis and Hayato Sakurai but can he afford to stand in front of Noons taking some shots to work his style of wearing down the opponent?  

Noons trainer Kimo Show mocks on Diaz's style and laughs (3:14 mark). Diaz says Noons is too small to hold up under the pressure.

WEC 51 on tap: Who's going to the hospital? Who's gets a bonus check?

UFC president Dana White had to write four fight of the night bonus checks at UFC 119 and he probably could've written two more for Matt Serra and Chris Lytle. He's got zero issue with doing so. After hearing the strong critique of Frank Mir you know Zuffa wants great fights even if it costs the promotion a few extra bucks. WEC 51 may present the same quandary tonight on a card stacked with heated rivalries and fights that could go all over the cage.

The last time Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner fought they both had to visit the hospital for various ailments. Cerrone's head was battered while Varner suffered a broken foot and broken hand. This time around, Varner is expecting the same. He wants a quick fight and a win so he can fight on Arizona's first time big-time MMA card in December, when WEC visits Phoenix. But Varner says that might be wishful thinking.

"That's the ultimate goal but I plan on going to the hospital after this fight. I've already called the hospital and got a bed waiting for me," Varner told John Morgan from MMA Junkie. "Broken hand, broken foot, whatever, I'm ready. I'm going to let it all hang out in the cage and hope for the best."

Thomson takes unanimous decision over Cavalcante at Strikeforce

Former Strikeforce lightweight champ Josh Thomson continued his climb back to the belt with a 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 unanimous decision over Gesais "JZ" Cavalcante at Strikeforce in San Jose on Saturday night.

Josh Thomson showed mettle early on, getting knocked down with a Cavalcante right-hand jab. JZ immediately jumped into an arm-in guillotine. Thomson stayed calm, readjusted, and came out swinging. He landed seven powerful strikes, and then applied a triangle choke as the round ended. If the round wouldn't have ended, Thomson would have submitted Cavalcante.

Thomson continued to dominate the second round with superior grappling, dominating via side control, but JZ moved ahead during the third and final round. He took Thomson down with ease, and controlled him on the ground. Thomson continued to remain active on the bottom, getting in the rubber guard to defend himself from JZ. He even smiled and waved to the crowd at one point, trying to show that he was fine.

Though it was a close bout, Thomson was more successful on paper. He landed 76 percent of his strikes and had more dominant positions than Cavalcante. The 30-27 score card is questionable, with even Thomson saying that there was no way he won that fight 30-27.

With this win, Thomson is set to get another chance at Gilbert Melendez and the Strikeforce lightweight belt. This will be their third bout, with each fighter taking one win.

Another British prospect arrives with Warburton debuting at UFC 120

The sport was a virtual non-entity in the early 2000's in the U.K. Without high school wrestling and little jiu-jitsu taught around England, the country didn't look like much of a candidate become a pipeline for MMA prospects. Then came Michael Bisping's 2006 appearance on Season 3 of "The Ultimate Fighter" followed by the UFC's return to the U.K. with live events and now you have a region that could have a British-born champ sometime in the near future. This weekend UFC 120 features Bisping in the main event and unbeaten 22-year-old John Hathaway on the televised portion of the card. Kurt Warburton is hoping he can be the next Brit who makes a big splash.

His story is a little different than Hathaway and Bisping. A former pipe-fitter, Warburton only picked up fighting five years ago. But he's a fast learner. Working out of the same gym as Bisping, The Wolfslair, Warburton comes highly recommended.

"The guy's got incredible standup, he's incredibly fit and ridiculously strong for a lightweight. He's almost damn near impossible to take down and then once you do he gets up almost immediately," Bisping told Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press.

The UFC must think highly of him as well or the promotion is trying to get Spencer Fisher (24-6) back on the winning track after two straight losses. That's right Fisher, with 13 UFC fights under his belt, draws Warburton on the card in London.

"At first I was a big shocked, because I didn't think I'd get the opportunity to fight someone with such a big name for my first fight," said Warburton. "There's ups and downs with that. The upside is if I do beat him, or when I do beat him, there's going to be a lot of talk about it. Obviously it's going to be hard. He's more experienced than me, he's had some great wars so hopefully I can put up a good fight and maybe get fight of the night (bonus) or something."

In his talks with the Canadian Press, Warburton spoke with humility. He opened up a little more with British-based Fighter's Only Magazine about what he thinks is a lack of respect on the part of Fisher.

"... but I think he is underestimating me and he is going to get a shock," said Warburton. ”He’s got a lot more experience but there’s a lot more pressure on him as well. I have seen in some interviews where he is saying I am slow and he is just going to finish me, and he is looking beyond me. So, let him think that. I am not just turning up for him to walk all over me. He’s not taking me seriously but I think after a few minutes in the ring with me, I think he start taking me serious."

Warburton's dedication to an MMA career is serious. With the help of three sponsors, he was able to quit his gig as a gas pipe-fitter. He lives at the Wolfslair from Mon-Thurs, 140 miles away from his hometown of Bishop Auckland, so he's clearly got his wife in his corner.
